Design Briefs – Ordinary Level
1. Design and make a compact desktop lamp for use by a young person in their personal space. The design should be enhanced by the use of native solid wood and should incorporate a facility to hold a mobile phone. All electrical connections and fittings should be included and must comply with current safety standards.

Design Briefs – Higher Level

1. At mealtimes the table can be cluttered and short of space. Design and make a portable and compact artefact to aid in the utilisation of space at mealtimes. Your solution should hold everyday mealtime items and make them easily accessible to those dining. Your artefact should incorporate design elements that contribute to an elegant centrepiece.

The design and realisation of your artefact should demonstrate a range of handcraft skills. The artefact should be suitable for display on a shelf or mantelpiece.

3. An elegant wooden feature can be functional whilst enhancing an entrance hallway. Design and make an attractive wall mounted artefact to hold three coats. It should also incorporate a storage facility for some additional small items. The handcrafted artefact should be slimline and should evoke a theme of your choice. Professor Emeritus School of English T.C.D. Visit

Hazelwood College sixth year student Julia O’Doherty (left) recently invited Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin, Professor Emeritus School of English in Trinity College Dublin (right), to speak to her year group about the poetry that Ms Ní Chuilleanáin wrote that is part of the English Leaving Certificate syllabus for this year. Students were able to question Ms Ní Chuilleanáin about her work at length.

Historic Win for Hazelwood College

Recently, the Hazelwood College senior girls capped the perfect year when they secured the perfect double after winning the Limerick A Camogie Championship along with their Senior Cork Camogie Championship title earlier in the year. Hazelwood College are the only school to hold both a Limerick and Cork title in the same year in camogie.

The referee on the day was Seanie Hartnett and weather conditions were ever changing. Hazelwood started in bright sunshine and ended in a flurry of hailstones. People involved with Laurel Hill and Hazelwood camogie teams and understand the rivalry between them knew it was going to be a tough battle from the throw in and it was hard to predict who would come out on top.

The match began at a hectic pace Hazelwood securing position and eventually leading to Cliona O’ Callaghan throwing the first point over the bar. However, from the get go it was clear that Laurel Hills side was going to put up a fight.

There was a great performance from Cliona O’ Callaghan in our forward line who scored a total of 1-3 in the first half and 1-5 in the second half. Our captain Aine Cunningham also scored 1-1 in the second half and along with Donna Mulcahy’s point in the second half it brought the final score to 3-11 to Laurel Hills 2-6.

Hazelwood’s back line defended ferociously throughout, led by Tara Fitzgibbon and Rosin Twohill, who cleared every ball that came their way. Chloe O’ Brien’s impeccable delivery made the forwards’ job a lot easier, constantly running up and down the side delivering every ball she could into the forward line.

Mr. Tom Halpin was a very proud manager with two County A Championships delivered.
