Science Week Ireland 2015 was celebrated at Hazelwood College with the seventh annual Primary School’s Science Quiz on Thursday night, November 12th. All local primary schools were invited to attend this exciting event to promote Science Week. It was wonderful to welcome all of the primary school pupils, teachers, parents and friends who attended on the night. All of the primary pupils thoroughly impressed, with their teamwork and knowledge, during eight rounds of questioning. Surprise lucky dip spot prizes and refreshments were very popular among the eager pupils at the half-time break. As the end of the quiz came to a close, excitement was high as five tiebreaker rounds were battled through in order to find the top three placed teams. Congratulations to Broadford N.S who were overall winners, with Tullylease N.S coming in second place and Courtney Boys N.S in third place. Athletics News Roundup

Shining Silver Success

It has been a busy start to the semester for the athletes of Hazelwood College, competing on the provincial, national and even international arenas as they arena.

To start with, the most noteworthy Hazelwood athlete is Noelle Lenihan. Noelle, a fifth year student in Hazelwood travelled to Doha in Qatar to compete in the World Para Games in the discus. Travelling out to Doha, her personal best in the discus was just over 30m, which saw her ranked third in the world rankings. Noelle, accompanied by her father and coach and Dave Mc Sweeney, got a week to practice in Doha leading up to the games. During this week, Noelle indicated that things were looking good with consistent throws in the range of her personal best. This put her in good fettle for the competition. On the day of the competition Noelle, described as being as cool as a breeze, showed none of the normal nerves with a first international competition. Her first throw was a personal best just over 31m, putting her in second place. He second round throw of 31.68m was her furthest throw, cementing her silver medal. A silver medal at a world championship is a massive achievement, but what makes this even more impressive was that Noelle was competing against senior athletes. She was the youngest in the competition, by far. On top of this, her silver medal throw was a world record for her classification.

Hazelwood College wishes to extend Noelle and her family huge congratulations on her achievement. On the provincial front,

Hazelwood College sent a team of four athletes to the Munster Schools’ Combined Events Finals. Jack McCarthy competed in junior boys’ competition. This was his first time competing in combined events. The events for the boys included the 60m hurdles, long jump, shot putt, 200m and the 800m. Jack competed well, getting personal bests in the 60m hurdles, long jump and 800m, ultimately finishing fourteenth out of a field of fifty three.

Kevin O’Leary and Ethan Knipe competed in the intermediate boys’ competition. Both boys recorded more than one personal best in their competitions, Ethan ran a time of 28.7s for his 200m, taking one second off his personal best. Kevin recorded 3 personal bests, including 8.38m in the shot, 26.8 in the 200m and 2.35 in the 800m. These results placed Ethan and Kevin in 17th and 9th place respectively, out of a field of 32. With a further season of training under their belts, they will surely contend for medals next year.

Laoise Bennis competed in the senior girls’ competition. Although she was not in top form, due to missing training due to injury, she still did enough to secure the gold medal and qualification for the national combined events final in Athlone. The extra couple of weeks training between the Munsters and the Nationals stood to Laoise. She was able to improve her measure in the high jump to 1.52m and her long jump to 4.40m to put her in contention for the gold medal. However lack of time to train over hurdles and shot saw the leader open a gap that was going to be hard to catch. Going into the 800m, Laoise was in second place needing to beat the girl in first place by 20 seconds. She went out hard in the 800m, opening a lead of 7 seconds. However the leader spotted the gap and worked her way back onto Laoise’s shoulder to just pass her on the line. This meant that Laoise would have to settle for silver. It is worth mentioning that this is the first ever National Secondary School medal won by a Hazelwood College Athlete. Considering the form and improvements made by other Hazelwood athletes, this will not be the last.

Hazelwood First Year Hurlers’ Heroics

By Oisin Brennan – Transition Year

Hazelwood College: 3-12
Crescent College Comprehensive: 2-04

Hazelwood College first year hurling team came out on top in this County Limerick First Year Colleges’ Competition encounter with Crescent College Comprehensive. Hazelwood dominated the entire game, except for brief spells of Crescent determination to impose themselves on the match were made.

In the first half Hazelwood came out strong and were 0-07 points to no score after fifteen minutes. David Boyce scored three of these without reply from the Crescent College Comprehensive. Crescent eventually scored two points and looked to eat into the lead. Hazelwood regrouped, putting the Crescent goal under constant threat, only to be met with a determined defence. A goal finally came after an Owen Hayes shot was well saved, but Ronan O’Connor slotted home the rebound. Hazelwood put up another two points before the half ended. Towards the close of the first half David Boyce was replaced by Tim Sheerin. Half-time arrived with Hazelwood 1-09 to Crescent’s 0-02 ahead.

A confident Hazelwood side started the second half firmly intending to maintain their dominance. It was Sheerin who scored the second goal for Hazelwood as they increased the pressure on Crescent in the early stages of the second-half. Another goal and three points were scored before tiredness began to show and Crescent began to have opportunities. Crescent’s impressive fightback saw them pick off 1-1 from frees and another 1-1 from play in the last quarter of the game, showing an impressive spirit. Thanks to a solid performance from Hazelwood College, they can now go to the next stage of the competition.

Under 15 Munster Schools’ Football

Hazelwood College U15’s football

Hazelwood College 6-8
Scoil Phobail Beara 3-12

Well done to Hazelwood College U15 footballers who got through the first round of the Munster Schools’Competition, when they beat Scoil Phobail Beara on Friday last, with a final score of 6-8 to 3-12. Beara had a great start to the game, with a goal in the opening minutes of the game. Hazelwood couldn’t get a hold of the ball, but once they did they played it up to Ben O’ Connor who got the second goal of the match. From there on, it was a close game up until half time. Hazelwood made two subs at half time that changed the game around. Hazelwood came out in the second half more determined as sub Cillian Cahill got two quick goals. Beara fell behind in the next couple of minutes. As Hazelwood took a great lead, they relaxed and Beara caught up. With twenty minutes to go, Conor Shanahan gave away a disappointing penalty. As the Beara full forward placed the ball towards the bottom left corner of the goal, Eoin Finn stretched across the goal, getting his fingertips to the ball, but his efforts were just not enough. With ten minutes to go Beara took a six point lead. Hazelwood made a tactical switch by putting TJ Kelly in full forward, they took back the lead when TJ got a goal. This raised the heads of his teammates to finish the match on a high.

Scorers: Ben O’ Connor (2-2), Kieran o’ Flynn (1-3), Colm Ryan (0-2), Cillian Cahill (2-1), TJ Kelley (1-0)

Phase 3 Extension Latest News

Finally after a number of unscheduled delays Hazelwood College is happy to announce the plans for our new extension have finally been submitted to Limerick County Council.

The extension will comprise of a Home Economics Suite, a new Science Laboratory, a new computer room, 5 general classrooms, 3 support classrooms and a number of other facilities including Pastoral Care offices, toilet facilities, referees facilities and all the supports a building of its size will require.

The new building will be built to the latest standards in engineering, and will be built to near Passiv standards, meaning it will be a warm and comfortable building. Every room will be built with maximising light and natural ventilation in mind.

As the building will be built on the current outdoor hard-court area a new hard-court area will be constructed to the western end of the existing building.

Should all go to plan, the intention is to conduct the heavy groundworks over the summer months of 2016 with the new building to be completed in advance of the academic year beginning September 2017.
