Hazelwood Crowned Cork Camogie Champions

On 4th December 2014, the Hazelwood Senior Camogie team came out on top in a tough battle with Coláiste na Toirbhirte, Bandon, securing the Cork Colleges Senior Camogie Championship. The match was played in Dromcollogher, with Hazelwood holding the advantage on home turf.

From the whistle, it was clear that both teams had similar intensions, and it took 6 minutes for the first score to be registered on the board. Ellanna Mulcahy won a loose ball and fired over the bar to put the home team in the lead. Points from Mary Kate Fehin and two from Cliona O’Callaghan put Hazelwood further in the lead. Bandon forwards were restricted to three points in the first half, due to consistent defending from the Hazelwood backs. The first half was a physical battle between the sides, and the game was score for score until, after a good passage of play between the Hazelwood midfielders and half forwards, corner forward Áine Cunningham received an accurate pass and finished a low shot to the net, giving the home side a four point lead at the interval. The half time score read 1-04 to 0-03.

Hazelwood started the better side in the second half, and began to dominate all over the field. Cliona O’Callaghan put the ball in the net in the opening 5 minutes of the second half, followed by goals from Áine Cunningham and Donna Mulcahy. Despite defensive mistakes that were the cause of conceding scores, Bandon continued to fight but failed to convert all of their chances, scoring just two points in the third quarter. With Hazelwood ahead entering the final quarter of the game, they pushed on with further goals from Donna Mulcahy and Áine Cunningham and points from Cliona O’Callaghan and Mary Kate Fehin. Team captain, Donna Mulcahy, leading by example, added a point to her tally, before Áine Cunningham handled a high ball in the square and palmed to the net. Deserving player of the match, Áine Cunningham added a point to her name before finishing as the day’s top scorer with 4-01 with a fine display of goal scoring ability. Bandon got a consolation goal towards the end, put it was too little too late for the gallant South Cork side, who, to their credit never gave up until the final whistle. Strong midfield pairing Chloe O’Brien and Ellanna Mulcahy scored a point each after making runs from the centre of the pitch to close out the game, the scoreboard reading 7-10 to 1-05 in favour of Hazelwood at the final whistle.
Referee Mike Sheehan presented the cup to Hazelwood captain Donna Mulcahy on behalf of her teammates. This was a well deserved win for the Hazelwood Senior Camogie team, and hopefully will not be the last of the year ahead for this talented group of players.

Hazelwood College Visit by Television Entrepreneur

Last Wednesday, John Brennan, visited Hazelwood College to talk to Business Studies students and LCVP students of the school. He spoke to the students about his own life, the struggles he endured regarding his success and gave them advice about setting up their own businesses. The students benefited greatly from his inspirational talk and some are now wishing to follow in his footsteps.

John began his entrepreneurial life at the age of 9 when he sold Christmas logs to the people in his estate. He also set up a library at a very young age and moved to Sligo when he was only 15 years of age. John Brennan is now a very successful entrepreneur and owns the Dromquinna Manor. He also runs the Kenmare Park Hotel with his brother, Francis. John and Francis are also well renowned for their television programme, “At Your Service”.

Penpals – Escolapies, Olesa, Spain

First year students reading some of the Christmas cards they received from their penpals in Escolapies, Olesa in Northern Spain.

They learned all about Christmas in Spain including the Catalunian tradition of ‘caga tio’ which involves children ‘feeding’ a wooden log in the days before Christmas so they will receive lots of gifts on Christmas Day.

Alan Devine Workshop

Hazelwood College Leaving Certificate Applied students who recently participated in a two day public speaking workshop with actor Alan Devine. Alan is probably best known for playing the part of Louie Gleeson in Fair City but has also appeared in Glenroe as well playing the part of Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch in the movie Veronica Guerin.

Thrilling Quarter Final

Hazelwood College senior ladies footballers overcome overcome, St John Bosco College, Kildysart, in a thrilling quarter final encounter.

Hazelwood College Senior Ladies’ footballers have continued their march toward Senior Ladies’ Football Munster Championship glory after a decisive win against a spirited west Clare side, coached by their mentor Mr. Tom Halpin. The first half was one sided as Sarah Shanahan took advantage of a gap in defence in the first two minute to hammer home an early goal for the Hazelwood side. Scores from Ellana Mulcahy (2 goals), Aine Cunningham (3 goals), Donna Mulcahy (4 goals) Katie McCarthy (1goal) and two points from Laura Stack allowed Hazelwood College to create a decisive lead in the second half, which was hard for Kildysart to come back into the game, as they only managed to score ten points in the first half to Hazelwood’s 9 goals and five points.

The first few minutes of the second half were more tightly contested with both sides exchanging points. At the halfway point in the second half an inspired John Bosco side raised an offensive on the Hazelwood full back line, but stern defending from Hazelwood’s Ciara McCarthy soon stemmed the flow of the west Clare attacks. The Hazelwood full-forward line took advantage of the stretched John Bosco backs. In the closing stages of the game, the girls played some extremely good football based on the team’s strength up the middle of the field. In the end it was a decisive win for Hazelwood College on a score line of Hazelwood 10-12 John Bosco 1-11.

Hazelwood College 3D CSPE trip to the Donkey Sanctuary in Liscarroll

Do you know your mule from your jennet? Well, the place to find out is the Donkey Sanctuary in Liscarroll which our 3rd year class from Hazelwood College visited recently as part of our CSPE Action Project to raise awareness of Animal Welfare.

Upon our arrival, we were greeted by a volunteer who gave us a brief history of the sanctuary and some facts about it. More than 4,000 donkeys have been rescued since the sanctuary was set up and hundreds of donkeys are currently being cared for in Liscarroll, with 500 more on a waiting list for a place. 280 donkeys were rescued this year alone. On the same week that we visited there was a case of 24 donkeys left in a forest in Kildare. If the sanctuary hadn’t found them they would have died.

Some people buy pet donkeys thinking of them as glorified lawnmowers, not realising that they have an average life span of 50 years. Their situation is rather similar to that of puppies bought around Christmas time, people get them as cute babies and give them love and affection until they grow older and lose their cuteness, at which point the mistreatment begins. The mistreatment can vary from not cleaning out their stable as often as it should be done to not feeding them or, in worse cases, beating them. The number of mistreated or abandoned donkeys has steadily risen over the past few years due mainly to the recession. They are expensive to keep and are now viewed by many as an unaffordable luxury. There used to be grants for farmers that owned donkeys, which made it beneficial to own them and give them good living conditions but that grant was removed recently.

The level of care that the volunteers give the donkeys at the Donkey Sanctuary is amazing. They clean out all the stables twice a day and give them plenty of straw, hay and water. The volunteers seem to really care about the donkeys, which is heart-warming. It was a delight to be able to see these calm, relaxed donkeys grazing in the huge fields of lush green grass. It’s almost like a holiday resort for donkeys. And another thing they told us there is that a mule is the offspring of a female horse and a male donkey, while a jennet is the foal of a female donkey and a male horse.

Chinese Language and Culture

Transition Year 1 students with their Chinese tutor Sheila at the end of their ten week introductory programme into Chinese Language and Culture, which was in organised in conjunction with the Confucius Centre in University College Cork.
