U15 Footballers progress to Semi-Finals

Hazelwood College 6-9
Scoil Pol 2-1

This opening round game, played in Kilfinnane Friday morning was much more competitive than the final scoreline suggests. The victory was built on a very strong defensive display. Jack Shanaghan, Pat Curtin and Eoghan O’ Gorman were well on top in the central positions. Hazelwood were on the scoreboard early with points from Eamon Carmody and Darragh Reidy. Adam Cotter scored an opportunist goal before the home team answered back with a goal of their own. We responded well and stretched our advantage with goals from Shane O’ Riordan, Eamon Carmody and Adam Cotter.
The quality of the game improved hugely in the second half and the defenders were at their very best to withstand several promising attacks from Kilfinnane. Hazelwood found the scores easier to come by with further goals From Stephen O’ Flynn and Eamon Carmody. Edward probably had the best score of the game with a point from long range.

Hazelwood College 9-9
Colaiste Na Trocaire 2-5

Hazelwood maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a fairly comfortable victory over Rathkeale in Dromcollogher Tuesday morning. With a much-changed team from the previous game, Hazelwood took a while to get into their stride. However the Rathkeale defence was coming under pressure and conceded goals from Eamon Carmody(2) Kenny Lynch and Lee Foley. We also had points from Thomas Curran, David Boyce and Kenny Lynch. Rathkeale dominated the latter stages of the first half, scoring a goal and threatened to score another couple only to be thwarted with some excellent goalkeeping from Mark Kelly.
Hazelwood dominated the second half and found the net with regular frequency. Ciaran O’ Sullivan (3), Stephen O’ Flynn and Brendan Harding were on the end of some great moves. David Boyce kicked a superb point from 40 yards in between times.

Torc Mountain

Images from the recent Climb of Torc Mountain by Transition Years

The four hour walk took the students from the base of the Waterfall at Torc in Killarney to the top of Top Mountain, a 5km climb of 535m (1755ft) in just over 2 hours. The walk took the steep tourist climb from the base of the waterfall to the top of the waterfall. They followed the Old Kenmare Road between Torc and Mangerton mountains until they reached the south face of Torc. From there it was a trek along the OPW constructed trail to the top where a fantastic 360′ panoramic view was to seen on what was a cold but clear day. In the northly wind it was a crisp 7′C at the top.

Phase 3 Extension Complete

There was great excitement around the school last week as classes commenced in the new phase 3 extension.

The 11 classroom extension, including a new science lab, a fourth fully equipped computer room and a new home economics room, keeps the school campus modern and up to date.

This Superwarm ‘A’ rated building was built by Limerick company Connack Construction and designed by Leyden, Hasset and Associates. Apart from looking great and creating a wonderful learning environment for our students, the building boasts exciting features such as;

• The latest in energy saving technology
• Automatic lights which sense if the students are in the classrooms and also adjust light levels according to daylight levels
• Automatic ventilation system preventing the building from over-heating in the Summer months.
• Self-closing windows on detection of high winds or rain
• High speed 10GB fibre network and a high speed wifi network
• Rain water harvesting
• Heat recovery system

We look forward to many years of learning and teaching together in this state of the art facility.

Here is a short video showing the final months of construction and photos of the finished project.
