Hazelwood March on in Junior Cork Colleges Competition

On Wednesday 20th of February last, the Hazelwood College Junior Camogie team played Carrigtwohill in the Junior Cork Colleges Competition, in the sports complex in Carrigtwohill. It was a bitterly cold day with a howling wind, which were not the best conditions for a Camogie game. Hazelwood had the advantage of a strong wind in the first half. They took advantage of this strong wind straight away after the ball was thrown in. Cliona O’ Callaghan got Hazelwood off the mark with a fine point resulting from a great solo run from midfield. The Hazelwood girls continued to dominate the game throughout the first half with further scores through Cliona O’ Callaghan, Marie Danaher and Laura Stack just before half time.

After the break Hazelwood faced some pressure from the Carrigtwohill team as they now had the advantaged of the strong wind. The Hazelwood backs led by Tara Fitzgibbon dealt with the pressure as they cleared every ball that came their way. However, the Hazelwood girls also did continue attack. Due to this pressure the Hazelwood girls continue to score some excellent points through Chloe O’ Brien, Emma O’ Callaghan and Tara Fitzgibbon. Carrigtwohill finally broke the Hazelwood defence down and scored a scrappy goal. However, this was all that they managed to score in the entire game. After this Hazelwood applied even more pressure and they finally got the goal that they deserved through Tara O’ Leary. The game ended with Hazelwood wining on the scoreline of 1-10 to 1-00. It was a great victory and they now go on to the next round in the competition.

Hazelwood College 4-14
Cashel Community School 2-9

Hazelwood College’s Under 15 hurlers travelled to Killmallock to face Cashel on 27th February last. Cashel ratcheted up the pressure with a series of early points. After ten minutes, Hazelwood settled into the game, when Anthony Barrett snatched a fine point from range. Hazelwood began to stamp their authority on the game, thanks to the efforts of Hazelwood’s half back line of Ryan O’ Gorman, Gearoid Mathews and Brian Buckley, who closed down Cashel’s forwards.

Scores from Cian Flynn and Jack O’Sullivan saw Hazelwood storm into the lead, reaching a seven point advantage late on in the first half. However, the expected Cashel counterattack provided some eye catching points from tight angles. By half time Cashel managed to cut the Hazelwood’s advantage to a four point lead.

After half time Hazelwood moved Donal Molyneaux in to full forward and Cian Flynn moved out to centre forward. This seemed to breathe new life into the Hazelwood attacker. In the opening minutes of the game, Tim Larkin skilfully lobbed Cashel the keeper after his original effort was not cleared. After this dream start to the second half Hazelwood’s confidence soared.

As he did against Rathkeale, Jack O’ Sullivan showed skill and accuracy both in play and with frees. Hazelwood had a slight injury scare when Donal Molyneaux went down on the twenty one yard line after taking a blow to the back of the head. After some tense minutes he returned to the action and managed to secure some vital scores.

In the last ten minutes of the game, Hazelwood’s fitness proved to be the decisive factor as two late points from Cian Flynn and a last minute goal from Nigel O’Callaghan put the gloss on a solid Hazelwood victory.

Hazelwood College 5-12
Rathkeale 0-4

Hazelwood College unexpectedly eased to victory against an experienced Rathkeale side on Monday, 4th February last, winning by a convincing margin of twenty three points. Hazelwood faced Rathkeale in the Second Year County Limerick Vocational Educational Committee Competition. Hazelwood took an early lead, based on the skill of their forward lines and the steady supply coming up the field. Rathkeale pressed hard to get into the game but the half back line of Evan Coleman, Gearoid Mathews and William Enright prevented them from doing so. The midfield of Anthony Barrett and Donal Molyneaux dominated possession with their advantage in height and strength. Stephen Coughlan managed the Rathkeale attacks on his goal line with skill and efficiency. Despite a strong cross wind that had a major influence on play, Hazelwood motored on and continued to control the flow of play. The Rathkeale defence found no answer to the co-ordination and natural skill of full forward Dean Collins, who netted a fine effort into the top right corner from the twenty one yard line along with a string of fine points. A stunning solo effort from Cahill Finn saw him score an inspirational point from the full back line. Throughout the first half Hazelwood did not let up on the gas, going in at half time with a more than healthy lead of nineteen points.

Hazelwood continued to press early in the second half. Again the defence were water tight at the back only conceding three points in the thirty minute half.
Rathkeale mounted a fight back at the start of the second half, securing three points, before Hazelwood managed to reassert control. Dean Collins showed his dominance in the centre of attack by scoring some eye catching scores. Half forward Jack O’ Sullivan also showed some skill on the ball and accuracy with frees. Donal Molyneaux and Anthony Barrett, in midfield, acted to clear Rathkeale puck outs. While the score line indicates the level of Hazelwood dominance, on the day, they are sure to face tougher challenges in the upcoming games.

Hazelwood Hurlers Surge to Limerick Colleges’ Semi-Final Clash

Hazelwood College 4-22
St. John the Baptist -Hospital 2-12

Hazelwood College are now through to the semi-final of the Limerick Colleges ‘B’ Senior Hurling Competition after win over Hospital, which was not as easy as the score line suggests in a windy Dromcollogher last Wednesday. Hospital started well by getting the opening two points of the game. Jamie Butler opened Hazelwood’s account in the sixth minute with a fine point, from play, but Hospital struck back a minute later with a fantastic goal and two more points leaving the score 1-4 to 0-2 in favour of Hospital, who did have the advantage of playing with the breeze in the opening half. Hazelwood began to settle into the game in the tenth minute, helped by a Sean Fehin point followed by a powerful goal from the stick of full forward Shane O Callaghan. The scoreboard now read Hospital 1-4 Hazelwood 1-3 with 11 minutes played. For the next ten minutes both sides exchanged points but in the twenty second minute of the game Hospital struck with another fine goal. However, Hazelwood fought back, with a stunning goal, thanks to Diarmuid Buckley. This left the half time score at 2-7 to 2-7.

The Hospital team was first out of the blocks again in the second half and straight away got a point. Hazelwood, buoyed by their first half fight back, began to exert control with the wind at their backs. They scored 1-3 without reply. The score was now 3-10 to 2-8. Hospital replied with a point but this was cancelled out by a fine long range point from James Regan which was followed soon after by another Shane O’Callaghan goal. Hazelwood at this point were well on top, and with 52 minutes played, James Regan dropped in a high ball in front of the keeper who misjudged it allowed it to bounce into the net. It was now 4-17 to 2-12. Hazelwood crowned the victory off with five more points, two coming from Damien Lacey frees and one each from Eddie Prunty, Sean Fehin and Cillian Fahey. The final score was Hazelwood 4-22 Hospital 2-12.
