World Book Day

World Book Day was in full swing in Hazelwood yesterday. Kicking off with a bookmark design competition, the first and second years then each received a book for their own enjoyment. There was some exciting speed book dating and then some whole school DEAR time (drop everything and read) reminding us all that all of the technology in the world can’t beat a good book.

Junior Basketball News

First and second year Basketballers were in action this week agains Villiars. Well done to our first yrs who put in a strong performance, winning on a score line of 12 -7. Hard luck to the 2nd yrs who were beaten 18-32.

Marketplace Results

On Friday last the Business Department of Hazelwood College held its annual Marketplace where the Entepreneurs of tomorrow put their ideas into practice and showcased their products. The event was a great success with many of the mini-companies reporting a good profit. The event was judged by Mrs Mary Herbert and Mrs Ciara O Connor from the AIB, Mr Clint Sexton from Wiener Plastics, Mrs Anne O Dea Buckley from Dromcollogher Credit Union and Mr Noel O Grady representing Hazelwood College. The event was supported by the sponsors Meaneys Centra Domcollogher, The School Food Company, the AIB, Wiener Plastics and Dromcollogher Credit Union. IT Tralee Culinary Students Get Gold at CATEX

The Catex exhibition took place in Dublin from the 26th-28th February, it is Ireland’s Largest Hospitality and Culinary Event. The Hotel, Culinary Arts and Tourism Department were represented in the Chef Ireland competitions, which are organised by the Panel of Chefs of Ireland and endorsed by the World Association of Chefs Societies. The Catex exhibition provides an opportunity for Ireland’s most talented student chefs and hospitality students from colleges all across the country to go head-to-head in tightly fought contest across a broad variety of competitions. Now in its 53rd year, Catex remains the biggest competition of its kind in Ireland and is an excellent opportunity for chefs and Hospitality students of the future to showcase their talent in front of some of Ireland’s leading food and hospitality professionals.

ITT had a team of two students competing in the Chicken for Sauté Larder Skills and Cookery Relay Competition, Junior Class and they were not left lacking when the prizes were being presented they received gold medals. The students Kerrie Daley (Ballyheuige, County Kerry) and Shannon Curtin (Milford, Charleville, County Cork) are currently studying on year 1 of their Culinary Arts programme at the institute. Their dish was Sauté Chicken Chasseur – Glazed Carrot and Courgettes and Parisienne Potatoes. The college mentors for all this competition were Chef Lecturer Mark McLarnon and Chef Mark Murphy.

These students are to be commended for their achievements and the entire Hotel, Culinary Arts and Tourism Department “Would like to congratulate and acknowledge how proud they are of the students and their great achievement at the national competitions such achievements will greatly enhance their future career prospects. Special mention to Chef Mark McLarnon for his dedication and commitment in preparing the students for the competition and all those who helped make this a reality for the students. It is indeed a great achievement on the National stage”.

Shannon Duty Free unveils its youngest ever stockist

A young student has been rewarded for his remarkable entrepreneurship by having his product placed in the world’s first duty-free store, Shannon Duty Free.

Evan Quaid (14), a student from Castlemahon in west Limerick, has become the youngest ever producer of an item to be stocked at the famous store – the birthplace of duty free globally – after his Quaid Candles were put on sale there.

The young entrepreneur, who won the junior category of the National Student Enterprise Programme after developing the product in November 2017, messaged the Shannon Airport Instagram account late last year asking for the candles to be stocked in the store. After meeting him and his mother Triona, the Duty Free team didn’t think twice.

Head of Commercial at Shannon Airport Darren Smyth said that the airport was struck by his enthusiasm, entrepreneurship and the quality of the product. “Evan is a remarkable young man and it’s already clear that he has a very bright future in business ahead of him. We were impressed by his enterprise in the first instance and then wowed by his enthusiasm and determination when we met him,” he said.

“He got the idea for the candle making business from his favourite YouTube vlogger, bought a candle making kit and it started from there. That’s the type of ‘can-do’ spirit that has epitomised Shannon over the years.
“We want him to be the first but not the last young entrepreneur to have their goods featured here and we would ask any others out there that are producing non-perishable items to see this as an opportunity for themselves.”
Said Evan, “I’m delighted to get my candles into Shannon Duty Free. I contacted a number of stores about stocking my candles and Shannon Duty Free came back very quickly, said they liked the idea and asked if they could meet my mother and I. I’ve read up about the history of Shannon Duty Free, that it was the first airport duty free shop in the world. With over 1.7 million passengers going through the airport each year, it’s a fantastic opportunity to have the candles stocked.

“The staff at Shannon have been really supportive and this is a really big moment for me. Aside from being a great place to have my candles on sale, this is great promotion for the candles also.”

Said Shannon Airport Managing Director Andrew Murphy; “Shannon Duty Free has been a supporter of local businesses from its origin. In recent years we have put a significant focus on featuring local producers in the O’Regan Food Emporium and the Shannon Design section. We currently have 50 Irish suppliers with over 100 different products on sale in the store and now we have Quaid Candles sitting proudly among them.
“In addition to his entrepreneurship, Evan has shown great enthusiasm and courage. He’s been a pleasure to deal with and we are all in agreement here that not alone has he a really good product but we’re going to be hearing a lot from him in the years ahead.”
