Hazelwood Triumph-Senior Limerick VEC Colleges’ Final

Hazelwood Triumph over Rathkeale in Senior County Limerick VEC Colleges’ Final

On May 15th, Hazelwood College Senior Camogie team faced the stiff challenge provided by Rathkeale. The team, led by Aideen O’Flynn, started strongly, helped by a brace of goals by Becky Ryan and a combined six points by Katie Dillane and Aideen O’Flynn. By the end of the first half Hazelwood were 2-7 to 1-1, a score line that does not reflect the challenge posed by Rathkeale.

Rathkeale, helped by the breeze in the second half launched a stern defence and fight back, but could not overcome the strong defence marshalled by Tara Fitzgibbon and Grainne Sheehy. Thanks to the experienced heads on the team, further points were added to keep a safe distance between the teams. Further points by Becky Ryan, Katie Coughlan, Donna Mulcahy, combined with a leading performance by Aideen O’Flynn ensured that at the end Hazelwood were on the right side of a 3-12 to 2-3 score line.

Michael Wins Kerry’s Finest!

Michael Wins Kerry’s Finest!

The Ring of Kerry has more to offer than just breathtaking scenery, as a group of 35 hill and lowland farmers have set up a new business called ‘Ring of Kerry Quality Lamb’. They produce high quality ‘spring lamb’ twelve months all year round and sell directly to households, restaurants and hotels. Their products are fully traceable and Bord Bia Quality Assured. Ring of Kerry Lamb was featured recently in RTE’s Home Chef TV series by celebrity chef Nevin Maguire and The Farmer’s Journal newspaper. The public were invited to submit a recipe using Ring of Kerry Quality Lamb products. Eager Home Economics students in Hazelwood College rose to the challenge and entered with great gusto. Michael Fitzgerald a 1st year student submitted his own recipe for Spicy Lamb Tagine, which was chosen from hundreds of entries throughout the country. His eagerly anticipated prize was delivered to the school by Denis Carroll one of the successful farmers involved in this innovative enterprise on Thursday 3rd May. Michael’s prize consisted of an extremely generous hamper of Kerry Lamb products worth €100. His Home Economics teacher Ms. Daly was thrilled with Michael’s recent success.

Hazelwood College: 3.3
Laurel Hill: 0.8

On Monday May 12th, a determined Hazelwood College side set out to win their first ever County A Colleges Junior Final Vs Laurel Hill. Our girls were prepared to play against a very strong team and knew they had a tough fight on their hands. It was a bitterly cold day. As the match went on the girls played through blustery conditions and rainfall. By half time, with a strong breeze at our backs, Hazelwood College was up 2.3 to 5 points with scores from Donna Mulcahy, Cliona O Callaghan and Grainne Fitzgibbon.
Laurel Hill put great pressure on our girls in the second half but could never get the upper hand on our great defensive side and with some outstanding saves by our goalie Rebecca Duggan they didn’t get too many chances of taking advantage of the strong breeze. Our girls were busy defending in the second half with our only score of the half coming from Katie Coughlan in the closing moments of the game. Each of the Hazelwood team dug deep and, despite the serious pressure exerted by Laurel Hill, they came away with the victory winning by 3.3 to 0.8. It was a great victory and well done to all the Hazelwood College Girls.

Junior Certificate Woodwork Projects 2012

Junior Certificate Woodwork 2012 Projects

Below is a selection of the projects submitted by this years woodwork classes for the State Examinations.

Students had to pick one of the following design briefs and submit a project they felt answered the brief

Design Briefs – Ordinary Level

1. Design and make a small decorative pull-along toy suitable for a young child. The toy should be safe when in use. It should have a cartoon character theme and be attractive to the child.

2. Design and make an elegant artefact to hold and display containers for tea, coffee and sugar. Your design should be enhanced by the use of solid wood. The artefact should be hand crafted and should complement the style of the existing kitchen.

3. Design and make a wall-mounted artefact that provides an easy method for feeding
small birds during the winter period. Protection from predators should be considered in the design and the artefact should also reflect a nature theme.

Design Briefs – Higher Level

1. Carefully placed lighting can greatly enhance the atmosphere of a living area. Design and make a compact table on which to place a small lamp. The table should be elegant in appearance and should display the functional simplicity of hand crafted joints. You should clearly explain how you minimised your carbon footprint in the design, selection of materials and in the processes used to manufacture the artefact.

2. The Olympic ideal of a healthy mind, body and spirit expressed through participation in sport and exercise, motivates many young people to adopt an active lifestyle.
Design and make an artefact which celebrates the importance of a healthy, activity-based
lifestyle. The design should reflect a theme of health and personal achievement. The finished artefact should be elegant in its setting and be inspirational to behold.

3. Many young people like to study in attractive and organised surroundings. Design and make a portable study organiser for use on a desktop. The artefact should be
designed to hold a maximum of three textbooks. It should also incorporate a facility for
holding drawing equipment and other small study items. Your design should be inspired by
the sustainable ideal of doing more with less. This ideal should be reflected in the size of the artefact and in your choice of materials.

“13th Title for Hazelwood College”

HAZELWOOD COLLEGE 4-10
COLAISTE NE TROCAIRE 4-4

Our senior girls played Colaiste Na Trocaire; Rathkeale in Neville Park last week
and after a hard battle finished six points clear. Hazelwood won the toss and
elected to play with the breeze (at times gale force). Which proved to be a
good decision by Captain Máire Flanagan. At half time we were 14pts to the
good and needed to be because Rathkeale came storming back in the 2nd half-
fighting all the way to the end.

Rathkeale had the ball in the back of the net before Hazelwood had even
settled but within five minutes we had things under control and with Máire
Flanagan playing exceptional football at centre back we slowly added on
the scores. Norma Kiely kicked our first score – a point from a free and was
followed by a wonderful goal from Claire Enright. Points from Donna Mulcahy,
Norma Kiely and Aisling O’ Connor followed and then midway through the
first half Aisling O’ Connor goaled after some great play by Máire Flanagan
and Katie Dillane out the field. Rathkeale hit back with another goal but points
from Katie Dillane, Donna Mulcahy (2), Nicola O’ Connell and Claire Enright
kept Hazelwood comfortably ahead. With 7 minutes to half time Claire Enright
struck again hitting the back of the net – not once – but twice in the space for
three minutes – half time score Hazelwood 4-9 Rathkeale 2-1

Against the breeze in the second half was much tougher for Hazelwood but
some majestic handling from our captain cleared many a danger. Rathkeale
scored two goals in quick succession followed by two points to come within six
points of Hazelwood but two substitutes for Hazelwood – Niamh McCarthy for
Stephanie Kirwan and Katie O’ Sullivan for Nicola O’ Connell slowed the game
down. This suited the Drom girls, Niamh and Katie began to dominate midfield,
holding onto the ball and also making some great runs – one of which set up
Donna Mulcahy’s point five minutes from the end. Rathkeale scored one more
point but could not penetrate the Hazelwood defence further and it ended 4-
10 to 4-4.

Best for Hazelwood: M. Flanagan, A. O’Flynn, L. Curtin, N. Kiely, N. McCarthy,
C. Enright, K. O’Sullivan.

Scorers for Hazelwood: Claire Enright 3-1, Aisling O’Connor 1-1, Donna
Mulcahy 0-4, Norma Kiely 0-2, Katie Dillane 0-1 and Nicola O’Connell 0-1.
