“13th Title for Hazelwood College”

HAZELWOOD COLLEGE 4-10
COLAISTE NE TROCAIRE 4-4

Our senior girls played Colaiste Na Trocaire; Rathkeale in Neville Park last week
and after a hard battle finished six points clear. Hazelwood won the toss and
elected to play with the breeze (at times gale force). Which proved to be a
good decision by Captain Máire Flanagan. At half time we were 14pts to the
good and needed to be because Rathkeale came storming back in the 2nd half-
fighting all the way to the end.

Rathkeale had the ball in the back of the net before Hazelwood had even
settled but within five minutes we had things under control and with Máire
Flanagan playing exceptional football at centre back we slowly added on
the scores. Norma Kiely kicked our first score – a point from a free and was
followed by a wonderful goal from Claire Enright. Points from Donna Mulcahy,
Norma Kiely and Aisling O’ Connor followed and then midway through the
first half Aisling O’ Connor goaled after some great play by Máire Flanagan
and Katie Dillane out the field. Rathkeale hit back with another goal but points
from Katie Dillane, Donna Mulcahy (2), Nicola O’ Connell and Claire Enright
kept Hazelwood comfortably ahead. With 7 minutes to half time Claire Enright
struck again hitting the back of the net – not once – but twice in the space for
three minutes – half time score Hazelwood 4-9 Rathkeale 2-1

Against the breeze in the second half was much tougher for Hazelwood but
some majestic handling from our captain cleared many a danger. Rathkeale
scored two goals in quick succession followed by two points to come within six
points of Hazelwood but two substitutes for Hazelwood – Niamh McCarthy for
Stephanie Kirwan and Katie O’ Sullivan for Nicola O’ Connell slowed the game
down. This suited the Drom girls, Niamh and Katie began to dominate midfield,
holding onto the ball and also making some great runs – one of which set up
Donna Mulcahy’s point five minutes from the end. Rathkeale scored one more
point but could not penetrate the Hazelwood defence further and it ended 4-
10 to 4-4.
