Berlin Trip 2014

Berlin Trip 2014

Bright and early on Thursday the 23rd of October, thirty-seven students and four teachers left Hazelwood College to travel to Dublin airport to begin our historical school trip to Berlin, led by Mr Farrell.
Undoubtedly, the trip was jam packed with historical outings, from Checkpoint Charlie to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp. Of course, we did allow time for fun, with visits to Berlin Zoo and BunteSchokoWelt Chocolate Factory.

Our tour commenced with a visit to Checkpoint Charlie, followed by the Berlin Wall Museum. Each and every student was immensely interested in the information showcased in the museum as events involving the Berlin Wall were brought before our eyes.

The following morning began with a tour of Berlin’s Olympic Stadium, now home stadium to Hertha BSC, of the Budesliga. The tour involved viewings of the dressing rooms, VIP lounges and also, the remains of the balcony where Hitler addressed the crowd during the Berlin Olympics in 1936. We then went on to visit the Jewish Museum, where we viewed various exhibitions, educating us on Jewish culture.

Saturday began with a long-awaited visit to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp. Without a doubt, this was the most eye-opening aspect of our trip. This revealed to us the true horror of the Holocaust, and brought to life these horrific events.

That evening, we travelled to the DDR museum, which showed us everyday life in East Germany throughout its existence. Afterwards, we headed for the Reichstag, where we saw a birds-eye view of Berlin as we scaled the dome.
Thankfully, each and every student and teacher thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of the trip.

Torc Challenge 2014

Images from the recent Climb of Torc Mountain by Transition Years

The four hour walk took the students from the base of the Waterfall at Torc in Killarney to the top of Top Mountain, a 5km climb of 535m (1755ft) in just over 2 hours. The walk took the steep tourist climb from the base of the waterfall to the top of the waterfall. They followed the Old Kenmare Road between Torc and Mangerton mountains until they reached the south face of Torc. From there it was a trek along the OPW constructed trail to the top where a fantastic 360′ panoramic view was to seen on what was a cold but clear day. In the artic wind it was a crisp 6′C at the top. Credit to this years walkers who knocked a full 30 minutes off the last years time returning to the bus 3.5 hours after first leaving.

Midway through the first half, Tramore settled, racking up several points and a goal. This was met with a sustained Hazelwood fight back, capped off before half time with a goal each by Coughlan and Hayes Daly, leaving the half-time score at 3-10 to 1-5.

Hazelwood College 5-11
Colaiste Ioseaf Kilmallock 0-01

Hazelwood College first year hurlers recorded back to back wins against St. Munchins College and Kilmallock this month, securing a successful start to the County Limerick First Year Colleges’ Competition. Hazelwood benefited from the accurate free taking of Michael Barrett on both matches, while the defence, led by Jack Walsh did very well clearing each and every attack from the Kilmallock players. The tight, competitive marking of the Hazelwood defenders really provided the platform for success, leading to scores from Jamie O’ Connor who scored 2-3 on the day. Hazelwood went through a purple patch midway through the second half meaning the match was over as a contest. Owen Finn wasn’t really tested in goals but did come to the rescue when Colaiste Ioseaf were awarded a close in free with 10 minutes to go. Other with very impressive displays on the day were James Molyneaux, Ben O’ Connor and Josh Moran.
