Hazelwood College Camogie Capture Munster A Title

Hazelwood College Camogie Capture Munster A Title

On Wednesday last Hazelwood College’s first year camogie team travelled to St Mary’s Secondary School, Charleville to compete in the Munster A blitz. Our first opponents of the day were Lismore, Co. Waterford. Hazelwood availed of every opportunity near goals and had built up a considerable lead in the first half. Lismore emerged a different team in the second half but the Hazelwood defence worked extremely hard and kept Lismore scoreless until the final five minutes. Next up was St Mary’s Secondary School, Nenagh Co Tipperary, this game was played at a different pace to the first game. Great displays of camogie were demonstrated by both teams throughout the game. Hazelwood emerged victorious and faced St Marys, Charleville in their final group game. This was a local derby with many players from both schools playing club camogie together. Hazelwood had most of the possession throughout the game but this was not reflected on the scoreboard. After a hard fought skilful game it ended all square 1-1 a piece. Hazelwood reached the final undefeated and faced St Marys’s Nenagh (Nenagh having beaten Lismore and Charleville). The opening half show Nenagh dominate in all areas of the field. Hazelwood looked tired after their three tough games. Nenagh scored 1-4 with no reply from the Hazelwood girls. Just before half time Hazelwood found the back of the net and faced into the second half four points down. A completely different attitude was adopted by Hazelwood in the second half. They seemed to realise it was a Munster title they were competing for and started to fight for it! Each girl on the field played as if their lives depended on it and within thirty seconds of the throw in Hazelwood had scored a magnificent goal. Goal after goal Hazelwood finally showed what they were capable of doing and left Nenagh stunned and unable to reply. Huge Celebrations followed the final whistle the game ending 8-5 to 1-5. It was an exciting day for all involved. It would be impossible to mention any particular player on the first year Hazelwood Camogie team as each and every girl was exceptional and played with tremendous pride in the maroon and white Jersey of Hazelwood College. It was a superb day of camogie for all involved and the girls returned to Dromcollogher exhausted but elated and excited with their victory!

Munster Ladies Football 1st year (A) Blitz 2009

Ten first year girls travelled to Rathkeale to take part in the Munster Ladies Football 1st year Blitz 2009. The girls were all very enthusiastic and eager to play teams from all over Munster. Hazelwood set out with team members, others first year players and some second year mentors. The first team which Hazelwood came up against was from Hospital. The girls were given a good tough game against Hospital. The Hazelwood girls dug deep and held Hospital to a final score-line of 3-6 to 3-5. The final whistle brought delight and relief, paving the girls’ way for their next four victories.

Within ten minutes of their first game the girls were back in action against Loretto, Fermoy. Fermoy had a number of physically strong players that popped two points over our goal post in the first couple of minutes. In light of this the Hazelwood girls hammered home score after score to put Loretto on the back foot. At half time the mentors encouraged the players and motivated them to play the half of their lives. The final whistle score-line was sparkling at 4-6 to 4 points.

Hazelwood was ushered into another battle within five minutes of their Loretto Fermoy clash. This next game was against a team from Dingle who showcased some wonderful football skill. Wonderful skill, that was mirrored and over shadowed in the end by the Hazelwood girls. The girls had to really dig deep into their short pockets to keep onto top of a neck and neck scoreline. This game was nail-biting and with a token thunder shower thrown in for good measure proved victorious for the Hazelwood girls who rallied together and played superb team football. The final score-line reflects the intensity of the game at 7-8 to 7-3.

After a break of a half hour, Hazelwood was placed to play in the semi-final of the A group. Hazelwood’s next face-off was against Causeway, County Kerry. With fire in their bellies and studs in their boots the girls were psyched and ready for action. Hazelwood and Causeway were popping scores over and back in third gear for the first little while until Hazelwood jammed their play into fifth gear. Letting fly the girls claimed a score-line of 5-7 to Causeways 2-4, dazzling supporters and observers with their skill, intelligent play and sheer will to keep motoring.

And so arrived the final of the Munster Ladies Football 1st year (A) Blitz 2009. Hazelwoods opposition was Castleisland. Castleisland had just beaten Coláiste na Sceilige in the other semi-final in group A. The girls were really up against it for the first half of this game and Castleisland were playing strong. At half time the Hazelwood mentors encouraged the girls to stay strong and to use all their skill and team spirit to pull themselves up and over the Castleisland stronghold. And boy did they pull and plough together, regaining the lead in a splendour of skill, melting Castleisland’s goal posts with a bevy of goals and points. The final score-line was this blistering final was 3-6 to 2-6. Needless to say the final whistle was echoed with ecstatic screams of delight from players, supporters, mentors and coach!!!

All-Ireland Junior Camogie Final Match Report

Hazelwood College :5-15
St Pauls, Kilrea :0-0

It was an extremely busy week in Hazelwood College in the lead up to the two biggest games in the school sports calendar. Saturday morning the Junior Camogie team had an early start to reach their final destination, Ratoath, Co Meath to attempt to overcome the Ulster Champions, St Pauls, Kilrea Co Derry in the schools first ever camogie All Ireland final.
The game started at a very high tempo, Aideen O Flynn won the throw-in and gave a perfect pass to Katie Dillane who easily popped it over the bar. This was the start Hazelwood needed to diminish all nerves and anxiety that had built up so they could get on with the game. Well taken points were contributed by each of the forwards. In the first ten minutes Hazelwood had scored 1-6 and continued to play as if their lives depended on it. The back line of Joanne Murray, Sarah O’ Sullivan, Caroline Watson, Loretta Hanley and Katie O’ Sullivan were simply majestic in defence and did not allow the sliotar even touch our goalkeeper, Amy Ryan’s hands throughout the first half. Niamh O’ Brien was sensational throughout the entire game both in defence and attack scoring 1-2 throughout the game. As half time approached the scoreline read 3-11 to no score.
Despite the aches and pains of the first half, Hazelwood started the second half with the same intensity. However St Pauls were prepared for each attack and again began to use their physical strength to try and salvage the game. But the defensive lines were not going to concede any score easily. Attack after attack was set up by the Hazelwood forwards and they were unlucky not to score more in the second half.
Each of the inside forward line, centre forward line and mid field scored throughout the game. It was the best team performance the Junior Hazelwood College camogie team had displayed all year. The intensity that each girl showed throughout the game would have made it impossible for most teams in the country to beat them! When the final whistle sounded there was unbelievable excitement! As Máire Flanagan lifted the First Ever All Ireland Title the school has received huge emotion was present on all members of the team. It was great to see many supporters greet the team from the bus in Dromcollogher, giving them the recognition they deserve.
The team would like to thank the huge amount of supporters, parents, teachers and friends that travelled to Ratoath on Saturday and to all previous games during the year! Special thanks to Eddie Prunty who was the fasted first aid person ever seen on any GAA pitch! Gary Hanley, Paudie Walsh, Andrew Lenihan for helping out on the day also.

2009 Six Nations Rugby for Hazelwood Teacher

VEC Teachers play a starring role in 2009 Six Nations Rugby Championship

Two Co. Limerick Teachers, Jeannette Feighery, Colaiste Mhuire, Askeaton and Louise Beamish, Hazelwood College Dromcollogher, recently represented their Country in the 2009 Six Nations Rugby Championship.
Jeannette who has been capped for Ireland 19 times, was the top try scorer for Ireland in the 2006 World Cup. She plays rugby with her club, UL Bohemians RFC and Munster and has three All-Ireland League titles with UL Bohs, one interprovincial with Munster, one Intervarsity and League with UL, and has participated in the Six nations 2007 and European Championships 2008. Louise Beamish, who also plays with her club, UL Bohs and Munster, has been involved in the six nations for the past eight years. She is the proud holder of 38 caps for Ireland and has played in 2 world cups, 2 European Championships and one European Sevens Tournament.

There is a very strong tradition of rugby in Limerick and Munster and it is no great surprise that such great players emerge from a province and County immersed in sport. We congratulate Jeannette and Louise on their outstanding achievements to date and look forward with the knowledge that they will indeed be leading lights for some time to come in the field of rugby in Limerick, Munster and indeed Internationally.

Semi Final Camogie Match Report

Great excitement as Hazelwood College reach their first Camogie All-Ireland Final

Dromcollogher was the venue on Saturday last for the All Ireland Semi-Final clash between Hazelwood College and St. Brendan’s, Birr Co. Offaly.
Despite the wind and rain the girls from Hazelwood hurled as if their lives depended on it! The score-line does not reflect the intensity which existed throughout the sixty minute game. Despite having much of the possession for the first ten minutes Hazelwood were unable to break through Birr’s tough defensive lines.
Sarah Moloney opened the scoring with a well taken point and shortly after caused the white flag to be raised again. Niamh Cagney then found the back of the net with a rasper of a shot which the Birr keeper had no chance of stopping. Niamh continued her scoring spree with two well taken points.
Sarah Moloney had the game of her life finding the net after twenty minutes, also scoring from both placed ball and general play throughout the game.
Becky Ryan added to Birr’s misery sending over a fabulous long distance point.
Niamh O’ Brien was sensational throughout the entire game both in defence and attack. She finished the half adding a point to the score-line from a 45. The halftime score-line read 2-7 to 0-0 in favour of Hazelwood College.
Birr emerged a different team from the dressing room, trying everything to break the Hazelwood defence, however the Hazelwood defence did not succumb to the more physical approach adopted by Birr at the start of the second half. Máire Flanagan and Aideen O’ Flynn covered every blade of grass throughout the game. Kallie Hodgson was a constant thorn in the side of Birr’s defence, weaving and wriggling way from each back that attempted to mark her.
Katie Dillane and Aisling O’ Brien delivered fast and furious ball into the goalmouth and both were very unfortunate on several occasions not to find the back of the net.
The introduction of new players worked extremely well and had the desired effect of diminishing Birr’s dream of reaching an All-Ireland final. Within minutes of joining the field of play, Grainne Sheehy had her name on the score board. Niamh Cagney again found the back of the net in the second half, bringing Hazelwood’s final score to 3-9.
The camogie played on Saturday last was of an exceptional high standard. No matter what Birr tried they simply could not cope with the skill and determination of the Hazelwood College team.
Saturday 28th March is the date for the All-Ireland Final versus St. Pauls, Kilroy, Derry. Despite this great wind each of the players knows that no silver wear has been won yet and the commitment and intensity at training in the past few weeks will have to continue in order to capture this All-Ireland title.
Special thanks to Dromcollogher/Broadford GAA for the use of their field.
Well done to all involved
