Alan Quinlan Visit

Parents Association Hazelwood College Invites Mr Alan Quinlan to address Staff & Students on Mental Health.
November 30th 2015

By: Joan Twohill, Secretary.

The Monday morning blues were short lived in Hazelwood College last week, where students and staff were treated to a visit from Retired Irish Rugby Union Player and Positive Mental Health Ambassador Mr Alan Quinlan. Alan is a 2 time Heineken Cup winner and was in fact voted ‘’ Man of the Match’’ as Munster beat Toulouse in 2008 when Munster won the Heineken Cup for the second time. Alan Quinlan was part of the selection panel to play in the 2003 & 2007 Word Cups, retiring from Rugby in 2011.

Alan has spoken many times and has written about his own experiences of Mental Health, depression, anxiety and how he realised the importance of seeking help in his recovery played.

In Hazelwood College, Dromcollogher on Monday 30th November last, Alan Quinlan delivered an inspiring speech to over 600 Students and their teachers, reinforcing the importance of looking after our Mental Health. One could hear a pen drop in the room as Alan spoke of his own personal struggle with Mental Health. He gave some great advice to all of us, for example the importance of shearing our worries and fears with those around us, that we might look great on the outside but we never know how one is feeling on the inside. Exercise, Diet , hobbies, staying away from drugs & smoking all play a huge role in Positive Mental Health Wellbeing.

It is important to take time out to ask the person beside us ‘’ how are you ?’’ Simple but shows we care.
Alan Quinlan’s message with regard to Mental Health Awareness complimented the great work in this area already being carried out by the Students in Hazelwood College and their teachers. The School has entered in the Mental Health Association’s Public Speaking Competitions for a number of years, having won the Limerick County Final three times and making it to the All Ireland Semi Final stages.

This helped enormously to remove the stigma attached to speaking out about mental health, making Hazelwood College a better and safer place to be in for both students and Teachers.

‘’ In life we cannot stop the waves of challenge that we are continually faced with , At times we need help in figuring out how to conquer problems and really the solution is to talk and keep talking and sharing our worries and woes’’ This is a Quote from a Leaving Cert Student, Mary Cussen, who was preparing her speech for the Schools next Debate.

The Parents Association of Hazelwood College would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Alan Quinlan for his Inspiring visit to our School, to the Principal Mr Brendan Burke and his Staff, for facilitating this visit and we hope that this day will have a long-lasting special effect on us all.

I leave you with a lovely Quote which I came across recently.
‘’Never give up on someone with a Mental Illness. When ‘’ I ‘’ is replaced by ‘’ We ‘’ illness becomes Wellness. – Shannon L. Alder

Marie’s Spin for Multiple Sclerosis

Hi everyone Ms. O’ Connor here,

In July 2016 I endeavour to cycle ‘The Wild Atlantic Way’ as a fund and awareness raising campaign for the Multiple Sclerosis Society. My father has multiple sclerosis and it is from his association with the MS Society that I have seen the wonderful services and supports that are provided, helping people with Multiple Sclerosis throughout Ireland. It is from this personal experience that I find my inspiration to undertake this 2,500km cycle along the western coastline of Ireland from Kinsale to Derry. I am fortunate to have the health and well-being to aspire to undertake this challenge in aid of people who may not be in as fortunate a position.

It is with this challenge in sight that I wanted to let you know about my plans. I would be most grateful of any form of sponsorship, support or advice you may be in a position to provide which will make this endeavour a successful awareness and fund raising campaign for the MS Society. Any form of support that you can provide will be received with a grateful, warm and thankful reception. Tell all your friends and spread the word.

If anyone wants to host a coffee morning or evening/quiz/bake sale or any other wonderful fundraising idea please feel free to undertake any event and I would be most grateful.

If anyone would like to take a sponsorship card please also let me know, it would also be greatly appreciated.
The Monster Easter Raffle and Mr. Finn’s Fun Cycle on April 13th are the first two fundraisers that are being undertaken. The Easter Raffle has been a wonderful success & thank you for your support.

If anyone is shopping in Tesco Newcastle West in the next eight weeks please put your blue tokens into Marie’s Spin for Multiple Sclerosis cylinder.

Please LIKE and SHARE the Facebook page if you are so inclined ;-)

Senior Camogie Munster Semi-Final Replay

Recently the Hazelwood College Senior Camogie team took to the pitch against Secondary School Clonakilty at Castle Road Camogie Grounds, Cork.

Hazelwood started with determination and three minutes into the first half Aisling Cunningham scored the opening point for Hazelwood. Sacred Heart quickly recovered with a long range point. Clonakilty took advantage of the bad puck out of Hazelwood and easily tapped it over the bar. Hazelwood conceded a free from a Hazelwood 65, when Tara Fitzgibbon hit into Laura Stack’s who quickly tapped over the crossbar in the seventh minute of the game. Clonakilty took a quick puck out which was caught by Laura Stack who took her second point in the game. Aisling Cunningham got a goal from the rebound of Laura Stack in the tenth minute of the first half. After a bad puck out from the Cork side, Chloe O’ Brien regained possession, which she passed off to Aoife McMahon to get her first point of the game. Hazelwood kept on scoring, thanks to the accuracy of Chloe O’Brien, Íde Cunningham and Elanna Mulchay. Clonakilty scored another point from a 65 just before the half time whistle, which left the score at Hazelwood 1-8 to Clonakilty 0-3.

In the second half, Hazelwood started the half off with heart and determination wanting to win. They quickly took off, getting scores off their main scorers, Laura Stack, Bríd Flanagan and Chloe O’Brien. Clonakilty conceded a goal coming from their skilled half forward. Tip Top Table Tennis

Tip Top Table Tennis at Hazelwood College

Recently, Hazelwood College’s table tennis team visited Scoil Pól Secondary School in Kilfinane for a two day follow up table tennis course. This was after Hazelwood College had hosted a previous course under the tuition of Owen Kelly and his daughter Mel Kelly, who represents Ireland in international table tennis competitions.

In the course of the first day of the course, hosted at Hazelwood College, student had been taught to serve and to knock their opponents out. During the second day of the course, in Scoil Pól, students were taught the various grips for holding the bat. This would allow students to play to their opponent’s weaker side.
