Ski Trip 2017

Hazelwood College hit the slopes in Andorra

Monday morning 23 January at 6am thirty six students and four teachers departed Hazelwood College, Dromcollogher and travelled to Andorra, France taking in the picturesque views of the Pyrénées Mountains.

We hit the slopes while enjoying our morning skiing lessons. During the days after lunch we got the opportunity to travel up the mountain on the ski lifts and cable cars and ski our way down the slopes to the sound of laughter and excited screams. There was fun and frolics in the snow as each of us achieved our goal of mastering the skill of skiing. Three of the four teachers who accompanied us on the trip took to the slopes but only one of them, Mr.Quinlan had the stamina to see it through to the very end.

Three of our group impressed the instructors so much that they were afforded the opportunity to ski from the summit, Jack McCarthy, Paul Power and William Dillon. The boys certainly tried to outdo the girls with their impressive twists and turns but it was the technique of Brendan O’Flynn that caught the eye of many other tourists on the Piste! In the words of Mr. Sheahan “That man was born to ski”. Mrs Murphy Reidy claimed that “the gracefulness of the girls was just as impressive.”

We were fortunate to have our Spanish student Andrea with us because she translated for both the teachers and us. We learned a few Spanish words, all polite ones of course. The girls were not to be outdone when it came to the next leg of our trip which involved a panoramic tour of the city of Barcelona and a shopping escapade that any fashion blogger or fashionista would be proud of. The Hazelwood ladies know their style!

The highlight of the Barcelona visit was an impromptu opportunity to attend a match in the famous Camp Nou stadium where the group sampled the electric ambience of a match between Barcelona and Real Sociedad . We had an amazing time with four great teachers, a big thank you to our French teacher Mrs Murphy Reidy who organised the tour and kept her patience with us all throughout, she was accompanied by Mrs Treacy who was the mammy of the group. We all returned safely and injury free after the trip of a lifetime. Great memories were made with great people.

Update to School Calendar

The Department of Education has instructed that Hazelwood College is to participate in training for the new Junior Cycle programme. As all of the teachers in the school will be involved in this event it will necessitate a school closure day for students on Tuesday 14th February. To facilitate this the timetabling of the ‘pre’ examinations will be adjusted by starting a day earlier than originally planned.

Secondly the Parents Council have decided to schedule the annual Hazelwood College Fun 5k for Sunday 5th March 2017 at 12.00. We greatly appreciate your support on the day.

Science Week 2016

Science Week Ireland 2016 was celebrated at Hazelwood College with the eighth Annual Primary Schools’ Science Quiz on Thursday night, November 17th. All local primary schools were invited to attend this exciting event to promote Science Week. It was wonderful to welcome all of the primary school pupils, teachers, parents and friends who attended on the night. During eight rounds of questioning all of the primary pupils thoroughly impressed with their teamwork and knowledge. Spectacular lucky dip spot prizes and tasty, fruity refreshments were very popular among the eager pupils at the half-time break. As the end of the quiz came close, excitement was high as the top three placed teams became apparent. Congratulations to Courtney Boys National School in Newcastle West, who were overall winners, with Broadford National School coming in second place and Ballyagran National School placing third. Thank you and well done to all the teams from Dromcollogher, Tullylease, Monagea, Ballingarry, Milford, Dromina, Ratheena, Feenagh, Mahoonagh and Gaelscoil O Doghair.

Dave Rudden Visit

Hazelwood students were very fortunate to receive a visit from author Dave Rudden recently.

Dave’s debut novel, already a huge best seller, is about Denizen Hardwick, a boy who doesn’t believe in magic – until he’s ambushed by a monster created from shadows and sees it destroyed by a word made of sunlight.

The Knights of the Borrowed Dark has been shortlisted for the Hennessy New Irish Writing Prize and the Bath Short Story Prize.
