O’ Eggciting News for Tara!

O’ Eggciting News for Tara!

Tara Reidy, a first year student in Hazelwood College, was recently announced as one of twenty runner up winners in the O’ Egg Recipe Challenge. This national competition was organised by the Farrelly family, who are Ireland’s leading free range artisan egg producers based in County Cavan. Recipe entries had to incorporate the O’ Egg products of liquid whole eggs or liquid whites, which are available in the chilled fridge cabinets in SuperValu and Centra throughout the country.

This O’ Egg product provides the same flavour and nutritional content of shell eggs while avoiding wastage from cracked eggs in the box, the mess and hassle of picking out egg shells from the bowl. It is time, effort and hassle free for the novice and adventurous cook. This newly launched product is pasteurised thus ensuring a long shelf life of 21 days ( 7 days once opened) and can be frozen successfully.

Tara’ s recipe entry of Chocolate Yogurt Cake was emailed in last December and a lengthy process of adjudication followed with the judges cooking and tasting each recipe entered to ensure that the recipes chosen were successful and as well as meeting the criteria of appearance, flavour and texture.

Tara was amazed and delighted when she received the good news of her winning entry and was thrilled to receive her prize of a signed copy of Rachel Allen’s cookery book.

Success at North Munster Schools Cross-Country

Hazelwood Silver Success at North Munster Schools Cross-Country

On January 30th, Hazelwood College’s athletics team travelled to Pallaskenry for the North Munster Schools Cross-Country Championship. The treacherous weather conditions were evident as we drove to the location, and we knew it would be a tough day for all. Despite the inclement weather our first triumph was Eimear Lenihan in the Junior Girls Competition, who ran phenomenally, keeping a steady pace at the front for the duration of the race. Thanks to her persistence, she eventually secured third place. This was a fantastic result.

This certainly wasn’t Hazelwood’s only success on the day as our senior boys secured a silver team medal. They were Peter Mulcahy, who achieved 6th position, Cillian Fahy, who achieved 7th position, Sean Flanagan, who achieved 9th position and Seamus Flanagan who achieved 20th position. They ran their hearts out, showing tremendous pace and endurance, constantly keeping together as a group, and after winning a silver team medal, they secured and qualification the National Schools Cross-Country Championship to show for their hard work.

The senior girls also did Hazelwood proud with three coming in the first 15, a spectacular result which saw Hazelwood win a second silver team medal and also saw the senior girls’ team qualify for the National Schools Cross-Country Championships. This senior team consisted of Denise Forde, who took 7th position, Emer Cunningham, who achieved 9th position, and Selena Kiely, who attained 11th position.

The intermediate girls, who also qualified as a group for the Munster’s Cross-Country Championship, put on a spectacular performance, never giving up until the end. This team was Mairead Lordon (13th qualifying as an individual), Tara Fitzgibbon (17th), Laoise Bennis (18th) and Ellanna Mulcahy (20th), all just outside the first 15, who qualified for the National Cross-Country Championships.

A number of other Hazelwood students ran on the day, but unfortunately despite their best efforts were not successful, most finishing the race just a few places short of qualification. Mr Grant stated on the day that he was “extremely happy with the outcome of the day and very proud of every student that ran”.

The students that qualified will now move on to the finals in Cork CIT, on Thursday the 13th of February 2013, and we are confident that they will once again do the school proud.

Hazelwood Heroines

Hazelwood Heroines

On January 29th last, in Newport, Our Hazelwood girls took on the gallant local St. Marys Newport team in the Munster Junior Plate Quarter- final, under Hazelwood Coach Ms Sarah Fogarty.

The match began at a hectic pace, with Hazelwood College dominating much of the possession and eventually snatching the first score of the match a goal from Hazelwood’s Cathy Foley. However, Newport fought hard for every ball, never giving up and bringing the score-line to Hazelwood 1:2 to Newport 0:3 as the half time whistle blew.

The second half was certainly a battle, opening up with a skilful point from Newport’s, immediately answered by another Hazelwood from Bríd Flanagan. Newport resisted vigorously and fought tooth and nail but some outstanding teamwork by Hazelwood players and some individual skill from Ellanna Mulcahy and Sarah Shanahan saw Hazelwood through finishing the game on the narrowest of margins, Hazelwood 2:4 to Newport 1:6.

Conditions on the day were not ideal, and credit must go out to both teams and referee Jim Lees for a very entertaining match. The Hazelwood girls will now proceed to play St. Colum’s in the Munster Junior Semi-Final.
