Heroines Blaze Brilliantly

Hazelwood Heroines Blaze Brilliantly in Basketball Battle

Hazelwood College’s Senior Ladies Basketballers, including sixth year veterans Katie McCarthy, Rachel O’Reagan and Julie and Katie O’Shea sought to end the year and in the case of the sixth years names their second level basketballing experience with a final triumph in the South West Division B Shield last Friday. Their opposition was Coláiste Nano Nagle, an experience and skilled opposition. After a slow start, Hazelwood’s determination to win became irresistible and Hazelwood’s heroines pulled of a comprehensive 48-20 point win, under the guidance of Ms Grainne Phelan and Ms Tricia Bridgeman. For the sixth years it was a final victory, before the one hoped for in June!

Tenacious Hazelwood Heroines Put Final in the Basket

Hazelwood First Year Girls’ Basketball team took to the court in UL to battle it out for the title of the South West Girls’ Final winners 2017. They were up against a tough Villiers School Limerick, side.
The girls started off well with great scores and defence and kept this intensity up throughout the match. With 3 minutes left Hazelwood were firmly in front leading 20-11 but Villiers came back to trail by only 3 points with only 20 seconds remaining. A Villiers player threw up a shot from the halfway line but the buzzer had already gone and Hazelwood had clung onto their small lead to win the South West Regional Girls’ Basketball Final

Hazelwood College 2-13
Castletroy College 3-7

Last Wednesday, Hazelwood College U15 team faced off against the mighty Castletroy College in the U15 Limerick Colleges’ Semi Final. In the eleventh minute, a Tristan Sheerin goal laid down a marker of Hazelwood’s determination to progress to the final. Hazelwood built on this with seven unanswered points, including four frees by David Boyce. After the restart Castletroy managed, through Diarmuid Hegarty and Ronan Lyons to take 3-1 in a purple patch for Castletroy, leaving just two points in the difference. Despite a concerted Castletroy siege on Hazelwood’s goal line, Hazelwood were able to take important points from centre forward, Ciaran O’Sullivan and a long range free by Conor Shanahan, which ultimately secured their passage to the final.
