Dramatic Munster Senior Hurling Encounter

Defiant Hazelwood lose out in extra time in dramatic Munster Senior Hurling encounter.

Hazelwood College 1-17
Carrignavar 3-12

On the 17th of October 2012 Hazelwood College narrowly lost out to Carrignavar in the second round of the Munster Colleges. Carrignavar started at a blistering pace, with two goals in the first seven minutes. Despite this, Hazelwood fought back with 4 points of their own, three from the stick of Damien Lacey and one from Darragh Kiely. Following Hazelwood’s sustained response, both sides exchanged points with Damien Lacey scoring from placed balls, leaving the score at half time 2-5 to 7 in favour of Carrignavar.

Hazelwood surged forward at the start of the second half, with scores from Damien Lacey, Sean Fehin and Sean Flanagan. In the fourth minute of the second half Hazelwood scored a goal through John Walsh. From here Hazelwood managed to push into a clear lead, thanks to the team’s sterling second half performance. Though Hazelwood’s heroic efforts cost the team valuable energy, the team looked set to achieve a remarkable victory. Unfortunately with two minutes left on the clock, Carrignaver grabbed a goal leaving them a point down and in stoppage time Carrignavar then snatched another point from a free. This meant that the game headed into extra time.

The first half of extra time turned into a low scoring tight affair, ending with the score even yet again thanks to John Walsh’s fine point for Hazelwood, which answered Carrignavar. Despite Hazelwood’s tired legs, the team rallied for the the second period, which was end to end action. Carrignavar scored an early point before Damien Lacey replied. Unluckily for Hazelwood, Carrignavar seized their chance and scored the decisive point to clinch the victory in the dying moments of the game.

Hazelwood College’s First Years’ First Adventure – Cappanalea 2012

Hazelwood College’s First Years’ First Adventure – Cappanalea 2012

Hazelwood College’s first year groups took time last week to participate in a week long induction course at Cappanalae Lakes and Activity Centre. Students were mixed into different groups and, under the guidance and supervision of Cappananlae staff, allowed to participate in activities such as hill walking, orienteering, kayaking and rock climbing. Students were totally immersed in the panoramic scenery of County Kerry, where they learned, in both activities and in non-activity time, to work together as groups and to make new friends.

Delicious meals were severed by Eileen and Kay, to feed students for the different activities. At night, students participated in different games, such as ‘manhunt’, where the C group emerged victorious. Students also played the spot game, where Dean Falvey collected the most spots. Students were always under the careful direction of staff at Cappanalae; safety instructions and equipment were thoroughly explained. Students learned about working together, in some cases groups learned the art of putting on a duvet cover!

Phase 3 Extension Announced

Phase 3 Extension Announced

Hazelwood College are proud to announce the latest extension to the building is to be built in the very near future.

Almost ten years to the day after Hazelwood College initially opened sanction was received to proceed with Phase 3 of the school building plan.

Phase 3 extension will comprise of 11 new rooms, these rooms will include a Science Laboratory, Home Economics Suite, ICT Computer Laboratory, 5 General Classrooms and 3 Resource Rooms.

Above is an artist’s impression of one possible design as drawn by Art Teacher Ms. Curtin.

More Details will be posted as they come available over the coming months
********
Update December 2015
Planning Permission for the new building has been granted by Limerick County Council. Currently tender documents are being prepared with a view to publishing them during January 2016. Subject to this process going smoothly we are still on course to begin the heavy ground works during the summer months of 2016 while the school is closed for holidays. Due to the size of the proposed extension the tender will be issued as per Government guidelines on a European wide basis.
********
Update October 2015
After many delays the plans for the new building were submitted to Limerick County Council this month. It is expected to do the heavy groundworks during the summer of 2016 while the school is closed with a view to completion in advance of September 2017
********
Update April 2015
Finally after a series of delays, some created by ourselves through requests for additions to the extension, some outside our control through outside agencies, positive movement is now taking place.

Over the Easter the Design Team met with the Planning Department at Limerick County Council for a pre-planning meeting and the final planning application is currently being prepared. The final drawings of the extension are due to be presented to the Principal Mr Burke today, with the actual application to be shortly submitted. Assuming smooth progress through each of the coming stages an approximate opening date of September 2016 is still a possibility.

Update January 2015
Despite a number of setbacks and delays things are still progressing, albeit a little slower than one would like, with the planned extension. We were recently given the final go ahead to proceed to planning from the Department of Education and hopefully this will happen in the coming weeks. The target completion date of September 2016 is still on track as build time is expected to be in the region of 6 – 9 months.

Update September 2014
Following an extended period of renegotiation with the Department of Education, a final increased budget has been agreed and the project should now commence, albeit a little behind schedule. The budget for the project has been extended and the project has been increased to include much needed auxiliary facilities such as toilets, stores, offices and relocation of sporting facilities on top of the original allowed for classroom facilities.

Planning applications and tendering processes will hopefully be completed in this calendar/academic year with the new building now expected to be completed for September 2016

Update May 2014
The project is still progressing and on schedule to open September 2015. Over the past few months different areas of the school have been structurally investigated, bore holes have been drilled and various tests conducted to establish the best site location and to investigate alternative locations. It has been concluded as expected to build the new extension on the existing tarmacadam basketball courts and to relocate them to the training area behind the main pitch. Also we are currently in discussion with the department to investigate the possibility of merging works due under Summer Works Scheme and integrating them with the new extension. A decision on this is due presently.
********
Update November 2013
Things are starting to progress with the design stage of the extension. Prelimary designs are currently being discussed with the Design Team and school Management. Also in the past few days a large survey of all underground services – water supply & drainage, electricity, phone etc. – was undertaken, measurements have been taken and a range of services location markings are now visible on the grounds around the school. Drawing for services are currently being prepared in preparation for the Planning Application.
********
Update September 2013
After a considerable tendering process the final design and services team has been appointed. They are due to meet in the coming days after which a clearer picture of the proposed design solution and timelines will be known.

Hazelwood Athletics Hot Shots

Hazelwood Athletics Hot Shots

On what turned out to be a gorgeous sunny day in CIT, four Hazelwood College athletes (Kevin O Leary, Laoise Bennis, Mairead Lordon and Maria Cremin) competed in the Munster Schools Combined Events Competition. Among the very stiff competition, the Hazelwood College athletes competed fantastically. Combined Events Competition involves the athletes competing in five disciplines over one day, being allocated points on how the preform in each event. Hazelwood College’s athletic team gave great individual performances over the course of the day, but were unlucky, in narrowly missing out on medals.

All four athletes had fantastic races in their hurdles races, finishing no lower than third in each race. This high Hazelwood standard was maintained when Mairead, Kevin and Laoise all achieved personal bests in the long jump. Laoise raised the standard further when she went on to win her high jump, with a personal best equalling jump of 1.45m, narrowly missing out on 1.50m. Kevin also had an impressive high jump, smashing his personal best to jump 1.35m to finish second. Maria struggled with her mark in her strongest event, the long jump, but still managed 3.76m. She also equalled her personal best in the high jump and ran a new personal best in her 800m. Mairead was very pleased with her solid run in the hurdles and saved her best performance for the last event of the day the 800m getting a new personal best of 2min 47sec, showing great promise for the cross country season.

All in all it was a fantastic day with lots of personal bests, but more importantly it shows great promise for the future.
