Cyclone Repertory’s Bullying Prevention

The Bullying Prevention Session

A workshop play, presentation, and discussion on the topic of bullying behaviour for secondary school students

Written and Presented by Peadar Donohoe, BA, MEd and Trinity School of Education Researcher

With an informative presentation, an engaging, powerful play and discussions with students, the Bullying Prevention Session aims to raise learner awareness about bullying by looking at
· What bullying is
· The forms it can take such as cyber bullying, social exclusion, verbal, physical, etc.
· Those who contribute actively and passively such as the bully, victim, bystanders, possible defenders, etc.

Ultimately, The Bullying Prevention Session has three goals to:
· Share current research knowledge about bullying and its effects on young people,
· Challenge attitudes about bullying and
· Give students prevention ideas and ask what can do to curb bullying in their school

Peadar Donohoe is Artistic Director of Cyclone Rep, a drama coach at Cork school music and a bullying prevention researcher at Trinity College.

Hazelwood Heroics See Off Rathkeale Challenge

Hazelwood Heroics See Off Rathkeale Challenge

Hazelwood College 5-12
Rathkeale 0-4

Hazelwood College unexpectedly eased to victory against an experienced Rathkeale side on Monday, 4th February last, winning by a convincing margin of twenty three points. Hazelwood faced Rathkeale in the Second Year County Limerick Vocational Educational Committee Competition. Hazelwood took an early lead, based on the skill of their forward lines and the steady supply coming up the field. Rathkeale pressed hard to get into the game but the half back line of Evan Coleman, Gearoid Mathews and William Enright prevented them from doing so. The midfield of Anthony Barrett and Donal Molyneaux dominated possession with their advantage in height and strength. Stephen Coughlan managed the Rathkeale attacks on his goal line with skill and efficiency. Despite a strong cross wind that had a major influence on play, Hazelwood motored on and continued to control the flow of play. The Rathkeale defence found no answer to the co-ordination and natural skill of full forward Dean Collins, who netted a fine effort into the top right corner from the twenty one yard line along with a string of fine points. A stunning solo effort from Cahill Finn saw him score an inspirational point from the full back line. Throughout the first half Hazelwood did not let up on the gas, going in at half time with a more than healthy lead of nineteen points.

Hazelwood continued to press early in the second half. Again the defence were water tight at the back only conceding three points in the thirty minute half.
Rathkeale mounted a fight back at the start of the second half, securing three points, before Hazelwood managed to reassert control. Dean Collins showed his dominance in the centre of attack by scoring some eye catching scores. Half forward Jack O’ Sullivan also showed some skill on the ball and accuracy with frees. Donal Molyneaux and Anthony Barrett, in midfield, acted to clear Rathkeale puck outs. While the score line indicates the level of Hazelwood dominance, on the day, they are sure to face tougher challenges in the upcoming games.

Munster Semi-Final Camogie

Munster Semi-Final Camogie

On Monday the 16th of December, Hazelwood College faced Christ the King’s Secondary School in the semi-final Munster Senior Camogie Competition. The team, managed by Ms. Anne-Marie McGann, got off to a great start with a Katie Coughlan point. Christ the King followed this by scoring a point to level things briefly, before going ahead with a goal. Despite this reversal, Hazelwood refused to be daunted and Rebecca Duggan and Marie Danaher scored a point each before Marie Danaher followed with a superb goal. Christ the King responded with a goal themselves, to take a one point lead. Hazelwood battled on as the half drew to an end. Orla Cunningham scored a valuable point to draw the teams level, while Cliona O’Callaghan kicked the ball over the bar twice just before half-time. Hazelwood ended the half with a two point lead.

At the start of the second half, Hazelwood faced a renewed Christ the King assault, as two points brought the teams level again. Kallie Hodgson, came on for Grainne Sheehy, just before Grainne Fitzgibbon scored a brilliant goal. This helped to establish Hazelwood’s lead, which they would hold until the final whistle. Due to the Christ the King resilience, several more substitutions were made with Laura Stack replacing Donna Mulcahy and Denise Forde came on for Grainne Fitzgibbon. The game continued to be a tit for tat affair, but with Hazelwood remaining in front. Cliona O’Callaghan’s magnificent towards the end of the game crowned a stunning achievement as the game ended 2:8 to 2:4 to Hazelwood College.

The team was: Amy Ryan, Aine Fitzgibbon, Caroline Watson, Chloe O’Brien, Emer Cunningham, Grainne Sheehy, Tara Fitzgibbon, Katie O’Sullivan, Donna Mulcahy, Katie Coughlan, Cliona O’Callaghan, Orla Cunningham, Rebecca Duggan, Marie Danaher and Grainne Fitzgibbon. Great Success at Young Scientist 2013

Great Success at Young Scientist 2013

Andy Quaid, Paul Power and Jamie Singleton all students attending Hazelwood College, Dromcollogher, managed a remarkable achievement for three first year students to reach the 2013 BT Young Scientist and Technologist Exhibition. Their project was titled “An Exploratory Study into the Attitudes and Perceptions of Primary Students in comparison to Post Primary School Students towards Science in County Limerick”, under the guidance of their science teacher Ms Herbert, was one of 1879 projects which were entered into the competition and one of the 550 projects selected to be exhibited. Such was the level of effort and ability displayed by the trio, that their project was awarded “highly commended” status in ‘Social and Behavioural Category’. This meant that their project was in the top 20% of projects in its category. Throughout the week, the Exhibition judges praised the students on their enthusiasm and the huge work that was evident in the project booklet.

Ms Herbert, Paul Power, Jamie Singleton and Andy Quaid would like to thank all the primary schools and post primary schools who took part in their project.
