The first and second year girls Basketball teams taking time out for some fresh air on Ballybunion beach after two hard fought games. They were unlucky on the day but put in two very strong performances.

Hazelwood College took on Castletroy College on Monday March 5th in Dromcollogher. The Hazelwood girls continued their winning ways with a final score of 23-11 to Hazelwood. It was a tough match with excellent performances from both sides but Hazelwood stayed focused on their task and came out on top. Big thanks to Castletroy College for their great effort and well done to both teams.

Congratulations to the first year girls Basketball team who took to the court for the first time today. A fantastic result for the girls as they beat Crescent Comp 20-12. Congrats also to their coaches Evelyne, Ciara, Ms Devine and Ms Cregan. Thanks also due to Emma Healy who helped out today.
The TY classes take part in a workshop run by the Irish Wheelchair Association allowing them to experience first-hand the difficulties encountered by wheelchair users-while also having the fun of trying out a new sport.


Hazelwood Heroines Blaze Brilliantly in Basketball Battle
Hazelwood College’s Senior Ladies Basketballers, including sixth year veterans Katie McCarthy, Rachel O’Reagan and Julie and Katie O’Shea sought to end the year and in the case of the sixth years names their second level basketballing experience with a final triumph in the South West Division B Shield last Friday. Their opposition was Coláiste Nano Nagle, an experience and skilled opposition. After a slow start, Hazelwood’s determination to win became irresistible and Hazelwood’s heroines pulled of a comprehensive 48-20 point win, under the guidance of Ms Grainne Phelan and Ms Tricia Bridgeman. For the sixth years it was a final victory, before the one hoped for in June!

Hazelwood First Year Girls’ Basketball team took to the court in UL to battle it out for the title of the South West Girls’ Final winners 2017. They were up against a tough Villiers School Limerick, side.
The girls started off well with great scores and defence and kept this intensity up throughout the match. With 3 minutes left Hazelwood were firmly in front leading 20-11 but Villiers came back to trail by only 3 points with only 20 seconds remaining. A Villiers player threw up a shot from the halfway line but the buzzer had already gone and Hazelwood had clung onto their small lead to win the South West Regional Girls’ Basketball Final

Hazelwood College’s Limerick Schools Junior Girls Basketball League team are pictured after their recent success against Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh on a 36-21 score line. After beginning the encounter with at a blistering pace, Hazelwood ratchetted up an impressive 25-8 lead by the midway mark. However, Hazelwood had to withstand an impressive fightback by Gaelcholáiste, who thundered through the third quarter, in order to advance to the next round of the Limerick Schools’ Junior Basketball League. Hazelwood College’s Senior Basketball team who defeated Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh on the scoreline of 50-11 in the County Limerick Senior Ladies’ Basketball Shield. After an initial quarter, which was tightly contested. Hazelwood launched a scoring blitz, led by Neasa Fahy, Chloe O’Brien and Rachel O’Reagan. This blitz was maintained in the course of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, tiredness caught up with the Hazelwood College effort and the frenetic pace quietened, leaving the score at 50-11.

On Wednesday 11th February, Hazelwood first year basketball team ventured to Croom Community Centre to play Colaiste Ciaran Croom’s talented first year team in the County Limerick First Year Basketball Competition. It was a slow start to the match with Ciara McCarthy scoring a lay-up in the last few minutes of the first quarter and great defence was mounted by Aine O’ Sullivan and Emma Healy. Croom’s team dominated in the second quarter even though our girls, such as Melissa Duggan, Lauren O Brien and Rachel Doody made a great effort. This left the score 18-10 in favour of the home side. In the third quarter, Hazelwood’s girls bounced back with Aisling Shanahan scoring a lovely lay-up , Ellen Reidy scoring another lay-up and Evelyne Mancasola scored a free shot. The score by the end of the third quarter was 20-15 to Croom. In the last quarter our girls came back fighting with Evelyne Mancasola scoring another free shot aswell as a lay-up. There was another score by Ellen Reidy and Sarah Enright saved the match by scoring the winning basket. It ended on a score line of 21-20 a dramatic narrow win by Hazelwood. It was an excellent game and Mr.Halpin definitely brought the luck with him!
