County Title for Hazelwood College

Hazelwood College: 2-14
Desmond College : 1-7

Hazelwood College defeated Desmond College, Newcastlewest in the Co. Limerick VEC U16 Hurling Final last Tuesday in Dromcollogher. While the ten point win was fully deserved, the game was a hard fought struggle right to the end. The margin of victory reflected Hazelwoods ability to take scores particularly through Jamie Coughlan who was once again excellent.

Newcastlewest opened the scoring and were clearly up for the game leading by two points after ten minutes before Jamie Coughlan steadied the ship with an excellent 70 yard free. Hazelwood then took over scoring seven points on the trot through Jamie Coughlan (twice), John Nix, Padraig Nolan (three times) and Padraig Cunningham. Desmond rallied back with a goal and a point but Hazelwood responded with a goal of their own through Padraig Nolan who at centre-forward was probably the best player on the pitch in the first half. At the half time whistle Hazelwood College were leading by eight points.

The second half was more of the same with both sides putting in 100% effort. However every time Desmond looked like they were closing the gap Hazelwood popped over a free to keep them at bay. Particularly prominent was Jamie Coughlan with four points. Seamus Sheehan scored a lovely goal and John Nix chipped in another two points before the finish. All that was left was the formalities and Jimmy O Sullivan obliged, thanking all those who were involved with the panel over the year.

Colaiste Chiarain,Croom 1-9

Hazelwood College had a nine point win over Croom in the Limerick VEC, U/16 Co. quarter finals in Feenagh last Thursday. In a hard fought encounter, Hazelwood just about had the balance of it over the hour. Despite conceding a point almost from the throw in, Hazelwood had the better start scoring two goals inside the opening five minutes both from excellent corner forward Seamus O’ Sullivan. Hazelwood enjoyed an extended spell of dominance adding a further goal through Jimmy o’ Sullivan and five more points, three from Jamie Coughlan frees and one each from John Nix and Jimmy O’Sullivan. The last ten minutes of the first half belonged to croom though rattling in a goal as well as two well taken points to leave seven between them at half time to leave the score 3-5 to 1-3 in favour of Hazelwood. The second half was tit for tat affair with Hazelwood although playing with the breeze not stretching away. Croom continued to pile on the pressure but Hazelwood’s ability to pick off their points, notably Keith Lacey who was on for the last fifteen minutes scoring two, saw them safely through to the semi-finals where they now face Askeaton.

Hazelwood Cruise to Munster Final Victory

Hazelwood Cruise to Munster Final Victory

Hazelwood College: 2-8
St Patricks: 1-0

Despite the harsh weather conditions, the Hazelwood college camogie team displayed a gutsy performance to find victory over St. Patricks, Cork City. The first fifteen minutes saw an extremely close contest with no score. The Hazelwood forwards put the St. Pats backs under extreme pressure and were unlucky not to score sooner. The game burst into life when Siobhan Enright placed a bullet into the left corner of the net leaving the Cork city goalkeeper with no chance. From here Hazelwood displayed their skill and fitness and began to dominate the first half. The second-half was a close run affair and followed a similar pattern to the first with Hazelwood dominating the early exchanges only for St. Pats to rally back. A late goal from St. Pat’s gave the school a new lease of life and the Hazelwood backs were put under enormous pressure. Sinead Kiely was simply outstanding and make many fine clearances from the full back line. Joanne O’ Gorman’s Trojan work at midfield didn’t go unrewarded scoring four points during the game and reeked havoc in all positions in the field for St. Patricks. Niamh Cagney showed what a true hurler she is and terrorised the backs throughout the game. Great performances from every player on the field were displayed and ensured that Hazelwood cruised to their first ever Camogie Munster title.

Hazelwood College: 7-7
Desmond College : 1-3

Played in tough and heavy conditions recently Hazelwood College met near neighbours Desmond College in the County Final of the Co Limerick VEC Hurling Competition. The Dromcollogher side put on a great display of skill and fitness to run out clear winners on the day. Hazelwood were outstanding in the first half holding Desmond College scoreless for the entire half. In the second half Desmond College put up a great fight for ten minutes scoring a goal and causing Hazelwood to hit the upright twice. However experience and fitness prevailed and the Dromcollogher boys took control of the game. Great performances from Liam O Shaughnessy, Paul Madigan, Billy Naughton, Michael Fitzgibbon, Jimmy Kiely and Denis Murphy helped Hazelwood to a deserved victory. Hazelwoods success on the day was largely due to the commitment and hard work of James Hartnett who has been managing the team.

Hazelwood College Senior Hurlers reach Munster Final

Hazelwood College Senior Hurlers reach Munster Final

Hazelwood College : 0-14
Nenagh Vocational : 0-13

It was a close run contest, but Hazelwood College triumphed over Nenagh in Mick Neville Park to reach the Senior ‘B’ Munster Vocational Schools hurling final. Nenagh, the favourites who had narrowly lost the Junior All-Ireland Final two years ago, looked dangerous from the outset scoring a point within seconds of the throw-in from Heffernan, their All-Ireland medal winning Tipp minor. However this was only a prelude to a spell of Hazelwood dominance. After ten minutes the score read 4 points to 1 in favour of Hazelwood who had scored twice through the unerring free-taker Jamie Coughlan and once each from Benji Sheehy and Pa Molyneaux. As Nenagh settled into the game both teams exchanged point for point.Jamie Coughlan again scored twice from frees and Jimmy O Sullivan chipped in from mid-field on the twenty-first minute to put Hazelwood ahead 0-7 to 0-4. This was however our last score in the first half and Nenagh, aided by a wind, put up four unanswered points giving them a one point advantage at the half time whistle.

The second-half was a close run affair and followed a similar pattern to the first with Hazelwood dominating the early exchanges only for Nenagh to rally back. Jamie Coughlan was again on song scoring three more points from placed balls. Ger O Gorman scored the point of the game from well inside his own half, two more points from Benji Sheehy and one from Pat Quaid left us 14 points to 11 up with only five minutes to play. True to the quality of their players and their ‘Never say die’ attitude Nenagh rallied back to leave just one point in it. The relief of the final whistle was just reward for the whos effort and skill from no 1 to 22 cuold not be faulted. Henry O Gorman was outstanding in goal as were the full back line who kept out what had been a goal scoring machine in the previous rounds. The work-rate of the half back line was immense and our forwards lethal given the chance. Hopefully we can carry this form through into the final to be played in Mallow at 12 O Clock on Wednesday January 31st against Clonakilty- The Cork Champions. We would like to take this chance to thank all those involved in the West Limerick U 18 Panel who provided us with a tough challenge the previous weekend. Though they ran out winners on the day this tough challenge was just what we needed.
