LCA1 students, Heidi O Dell, Niamh Ryan, Noel Geary and John Matthews from Hazelwood College who attended the recent careers exhibition in the racecourse in Partickswell.
Hazelwood College’s first year groups took time last week to participate in a week long induction course at Cappanalae Lakes and Activity Centre. Students were mixed into different groups and, under the guidance and supervision of Cappananlae staff, allowed to participate in activities such as hill walking, orienteering, kayaking and rock climbing. Students were totally immersed in the panoramic scenery of County Kerry, where they learned, in both activities and in non-activity time, to work together as groups and to make new friends.
Delicious meals were severed by Eileen and Kay, to feed students for the different activities. At night, students participated in different games, such as ‘manhunt’, where the C group emerged victorious. Students also played the spot game, where Dean Falvey collected the most spots. Students were always under the careful direction of staff at Cappanalae; safety instructions and equipment were thoroughly explained. Students learned about working together, in some cases groups learned the art of putting on a duvet cover!
Hazelwood College are proud to announce the latest extension to the building is to be built in the very near future.
Almost ten years to the day after Hazelwood College initially opened sanction was received to proceed with Phase 3 of the school building plan.
Phase 3 extension will comprise of 11 new rooms, these rooms will include a Science Laboratory, Home Economics Suite, ICT Computer Laboratory, 5 General Classrooms and 3 Resource Rooms.
Above is an artist’s impression of one possible design as drawn by Art Teacher Ms. Curtin.
More Details will be posted as they come available over the coming months
********
Update December 2015
Planning Permission for the new building has been granted by Limerick County Council. Currently tender documents are being prepared with a view to publishing them during January 2016. Subject to this process going smoothly we are still on course to begin the heavy ground works during the summer months of 2016 while the school is closed for holidays. Due to the size of the proposed extension the tender will be issued as per Government guidelines on a European wide basis.

Update October 2015
After many delays the plans for the new building were submitted to Limerick County Council this month. It is expected to do the heavy groundworks during the summer of 2016 while the school is closed with a view to completion in advance of September 2017

Update April 2015
Finally after a series of delays, some created by ourselves through requests for additions to the extension, some outside our control through outside agencies, positive movement is now taking place.
Over the Easter the Design Team met with the Planning Department at Limerick County Council for a pre-planning meeting and the final planning application is currently being prepared. The final drawings of the extension are due to be presented to the Principal Mr Burke today, with the actual application to be shortly submitted. Assuming smooth progress through each of the coming stages an approximate opening date of September 2016 is still a possibility.
Update January 2015
Despite a number of setbacks and delays things are still progressing, albeit a little slower than one would like, with the planned extension. We were recently given the final go ahead to proceed to planning from the Department of Education and hopefully this will happen in the coming weeks. The target completion date of September 2016 is still on track as build time is expected to be in the region of 6 – 9 months.
Update September 2014
Following an extended period of renegotiation with the Department of Education, a final increased budget has been agreed and the project should now commence, albeit a little behind schedule. The budget for the project has been extended and the project has been increased to include much needed auxiliary facilities such as toilets, stores, offices and relocation of sporting facilities on top of the original allowed for classroom facilities.
Planning applications and tendering processes will hopefully be completed in this calendar/academic year with the new building now expected to be completed for September 2016
Update May 2014
The project is still progressing and on schedule to open September 2015. Over the past few months different areas of the school have been structurally investigated, bore holes have been drilled and various tests conducted to establish the best site location and to investigate alternative locations. It has been concluded as expected to build the new extension on the existing tarmacadam basketball courts and to relocate them to the training area behind the main pitch. Also we are currently in discussion with the department to investigate the possibility of merging works due under Summer Works Scheme and integrating them with the new extension. A decision on this is due presently.

Update November 2013
Things are starting to progress with the design stage of the extension. Prelimary designs are currently being discussed with the Design Team and school Management. Also in the past few days a large survey of all underground services – water supply & drainage, electricity, phone etc. – was undertaken, measurements have been taken and a range of services location markings are now visible on the grounds around the school. Drawing for services are currently being prepared in preparation for the Planning Application.

Update September 2013
After a considerable tendering process the final design and services team has been appointed. They are due to meet in the coming days after which a clearer picture of the proposed design solution and timelines will be known.

Parents Association AGM

“Hazelwood College Parents Association AGM will take place on Monday 17th September at 7:30 pm in the College” All are welcome
Three is the lucky number for twin siblings at Hazelwood College. Pictured are first year students Emer & Noelle Lenihan from Milford, Julie & Katie O’ Shea from Broadford and Michaela & Donal O’ Donnell from Raheenagh with their year head Ms. Keane.
A Big Welcome to all 108 new first years this year.
On 29 May eleven students from Hazelwood College completed the famous Camino de Santiago in Galicia in Northern Spain. This was an historic event as the students were the first group from the school, perhaps any school in the country, to undertake this challenge. In total the students walked over 112 kilometres and in doing so collected a sizeable amount of money for charity.
Planning for the walk began back in October when the tour was first offered to Transition Year students. They undertook an introductory walk and soon afterward began to raise money for their chosen charity, Bounce Back. This charity is especially close to the heart of one of the students who participated on the walk as it was set up by the mother of one of his basketball teammates who committed suicide, in order to help young people feeling under pressure. In addition the students started to collect the equipment they would need for the walk. Here it is necessary to recognise the support of the parents who were the solid foundations upon which this journey was built.
The journey began on 24 May when the students met at Charleville train station at the early hour of 05:00 am where, despite the early hour, the atmosphere was electric. The walk itself began on 25 May from Sarria and continued until 29 May, with the students walking between 17 and 30 kilometres each day. The weather was favourable most days with only one day of rain, but this failed to dampen spirits and instead the students saw it as another challenge. The evenings were taken up with the examination of blisters and sore muscles. However, this did not lead to despondency and in fact a number of evenings were spent playing soccer with the local Spaniards or playing Gaelic football in the plaza in front of the local church. The final day began with breakfast at 05:00am so that the group could finish in time to catch the plane. This necessitated the use of flashlights as the route took the group through the forest, adding to the excitement of the day. Santiago was a welcome sight at the end of the walk and each student was delighted to receive their certificate of completion. Then it was a rush to catch the flight home and a dash across Dublin to get the train in order to arrive back in Charleville at 21:16.
The trip was thoroughly enjoyed by all involved. One student said it was ‘a great bonding trip. The banter among friends inspired us to reach our destination, helping us to overcome the difficulties along the way.’ Another summed it up summed saying ‘we became closer as friends, raised money for charity and did something for a stranger. The most rewarding thing I’ve done so far.’ The teachers too were very impressed with the trip and were full of praise for the students. Mr Finn was delighted and commended the students on their approach to the trip. He said the most common word given by anyone who encountered the students on the walk was ‘wonderful’. Often both Mr. Finn and Ms. O Connor could be heard saying, ‘I feel like a proud parent. They are just so committed.’
Well done to all involved.
BEUN CAMINO!
