The Transition Years attended LIT yesterday for the first of four weeks in LIT. Every Wednesday for the next four weeks the Transition Years will travel to Limeirck Instiute of Technology Electrical Engineering Department to tak epart in a taster course. The students will use the Automation and Robotics labs and the electrical labs to give them a taste of what a course in Electrical Engineering would be like and what careers they could expect from it. At the end of teh course the students will take home some completed circuits and pieces they manufactured during their time.

Pre Junior and Leaving Certificate Exams

Today Marks the start of the Pre exams for the exam classes. All Third and Sixth year students will be involved in the exams until Friday 11th February. All students will take full exams in all the subjects they are taking for examination next June.

LCVP Interviews

LCVP Interviews

Today in preperation for the work experience element of L.C.V.P. AIB Bank are in the school conducting mock interviews. All Leaving Certificate One students involved in the LCVP course are being interviewd by the bank and all the interviews are video taped so students can analyse their performance and learn how to improve their interview skills.

Jenny Vaughan Youth Officer from the University of Limerick Branch and Jemma O’ Dell From the Newcastle West Branch are conducting the interviews

Coca-Cola Form and Fusion Regional Finals

CocaCola Form and Fusion Awards is one of the major events of the Transition Year calander. Students are required to make any costume of their own design and the only requirement is that students must use recycled materials. Teams of three work on each costume from the start of Transition Year in September until mid January

The Munster Regional Final takes place in the Silver Springs Hotel Cork on Wednesday 26th January. The Transition Year class and Art students from third year who are interested in competing next year will attend with the entrants

ENFO Award for Young Scientist’s

ENFO Award for Young Scientist’s


Transistion Year Students from Hazelwood College Billy Fehin and Mary Ennis travelled to Dublin on January 26th to meet Minister for the Environment, Dick Roche who presented them with an award from ENFO the Enviromental Agency for the work on Elephant Grass. The students as part of the Young Scientist competition researched the grass and investigated it’s potential as a alternative renewable fuel. Also in the picture is their teacher Miss Neville who helped them with their research.


Humourfit

Humourfit Theathre Company will visit the school on the 26th January to perform two shows. These shows will be viewed by the whole school and will cover the topics of Bullying and Racism. After the two shows students will take part in a question and answer forum with the Artistic Director Mr. Micheal O’ Sullivan.

Visit by Engineer – Ben Noonan

Today past student Ben Noonan an Engineer with Limerick County Council visited the school to speak with interested Senior students and Transition Years on engineering at Third Level. He advised them on subject choice, college courses and requirments and most importantly what work a qualifed engineer could expect to do.

Bullying Awareness Week 24th-28th January

Bullying Awareness Week

Agenda

Wednesday 26th January
Humourfit will perform two plays to all students one on bullying and one on racism this will be followd by a question and answer session.

Thursday 27th January at 8p.m.
Frank Smith will talk to parents on bullying and related issues. All Parents welcome.

Friday 28th January
Frank Smith will talk to each year group on bullying and prevention.

Teachers will incorporate the theme into subject areas during the week e.g. SPHE, Art, English, Religion, CSPE, sport, etc.

The cost per student is €5

DAT Testing

Today Friday 21st January all third years are taking DAT tests. DAT tests are Differtial Apptitude Tests which assess students apptitude in areas such as Mathematics, Verbal Reasoning, Spatial Ability, Clerical Skills etc. The information provided by these tests is invaluable to the career guidance teachers in the school in helping the students decide subjects for the Leaving Certificate and possible college courses which would suit the students ability.
