All-Ireland Junior Camogie Final Match Report

Hazelwood College :5-15
St Pauls, Kilrea :0-0

It was an extremely busy week in Hazelwood College in the lead up to the two biggest games in the school sports calendar. Saturday morning the Junior Camogie team had an early start to reach their final destination, Ratoath, Co Meath to attempt to overcome the Ulster Champions, St Pauls, Kilrea Co Derry in the schools first ever camogie All Ireland final.
The game started at a very high tempo, Aideen O Flynn won the throw-in and gave a perfect pass to Katie Dillane who easily popped it over the bar. This was the start Hazelwood needed to diminish all nerves and anxiety that had built up so they could get on with the game. Well taken points were contributed by each of the forwards. In the first ten minutes Hazelwood had scored 1-6 and continued to play as if their lives depended on it. The back line of Joanne Murray, Sarah O’ Sullivan, Caroline Watson, Loretta Hanley and Katie O’ Sullivan were simply majestic in defence and did not allow the sliotar even touch our goalkeeper, Amy Ryan’s hands throughout the first half. Niamh O’ Brien was sensational throughout the entire game both in defence and attack scoring 1-2 throughout the game. As half time approached the scoreline read 3-11 to no score.
Despite the aches and pains of the first half, Hazelwood started the second half with the same intensity. However St Pauls were prepared for each attack and again began to use their physical strength to try and salvage the game. But the defensive lines were not going to concede any score easily. Attack after attack was set up by the Hazelwood forwards and they were unlucky not to score more in the second half.
Each of the inside forward line, centre forward line and mid field scored throughout the game. It was the best team performance the Junior Hazelwood College camogie team had displayed all year. The intensity that each girl showed throughout the game would have made it impossible for most teams in the country to beat them! When the final whistle sounded there was unbelievable excitement! As Máire Flanagan lifted the First Ever All Ireland Title the school has received huge emotion was present on all members of the team. It was great to see many supporters greet the team from the bus in Dromcollogher, giving them the recognition they deserve.
The team would like to thank the huge amount of supporters, parents, teachers and friends that travelled to Ratoath on Saturday and to all previous games during the year! Special thanks to Eddie Prunty who was the fasted first aid person ever seen on any GAA pitch! Gary Hanley, Paudie Walsh, Andrew Lenihan for helping out on the day also.

The camogie girls of Hazelwood got off the weekend to a flying start blitzing the opposition, St. Paul’s of Kilrea in a final scoreline of 5-15 to no score. This was an historic achievement by the girls and all involved can be immensely proud. Congratulations to everyone on a magnificent success.

On Sunday saw the turn of the Senior Boys B side, who, not to be outdone by the ladies, also created College history by winning the All-Ireland Vocational Colleges Senior Hurling B Final. Two goals in three minutes from Hazelwood College seized an historic win. Playing Duiske Grennan College, Kilkenny, who got off to a flying start but were soon stopped in thier tracks by a much superior team with Hazelwood College emerging victorious on a scoreline of 4-13 to 2-9.

Congratulations to the Senior Panel and to their mentors and all involved.

Hazelwood College Launches New Website

Hazelwood College Launches New Website

With the help of Poziteeve Design NewcastleWest, Hazelwood College has redesigned its website www.hazelc.ie

The new colour scheme of the website reflects our location on the Limerick Cork border and uses a colour pallete based and the counties flags of green / white and red / white. It also incoporates the Hazelwood theme from which the school gets its name. The Irish place name for Dromcollogher – DromCollchaille – means the ridge of the hazelwood.

The new site gives easier access to news reports and archive data from the school. The archive data extends back over four years, giving insight into the day to day running of the school. All information can be searched for by category or by date. For example clicking the category sports will give all the sports news added in the past four years.

Enrolment for new students is now easier to find and access than before.

2009 Six Nations Rugby for Hazelwood Teacher

VEC Teachers play a starring role in 2009 Six Nations Rugby Championship

Two Co. Limerick Teachers, Jeannette Feighery, Colaiste Mhuire, Askeaton and Louise Beamish, Hazelwood College Dromcollogher, recently represented their Country in the 2009 Six Nations Rugby Championship.
Jeannette who has been capped for Ireland 19 times, was the top try scorer for Ireland in the 2006 World Cup. She plays rugby with her club, UL Bohemians RFC and Munster and has three All-Ireland League titles with UL Bohs, one interprovincial with Munster, one Intervarsity and League with UL, and has participated in the Six nations 2007 and European Championships 2008. Louise Beamish, who also plays with her club, UL Bohs and Munster, has been involved in the six nations for the past eight years. She is the proud holder of 38 caps for Ireland and has played in 2 world cups, 2 European Championships and one European Sevens Tournament.

There is a very strong tradition of rugby in Limerick and Munster and it is no great surprise that such great players emerge from a province and County immersed in sport. We congratulate Jeannette and Louise on their outstanding achievements to date and look forward with the knowledge that they will indeed be leading lights for some time to come in the field of rugby in Limerick, Munster and indeed Internationally.

J.P. McManus Scholarships Awards

Students in County Limerick have been awarded third level scholarships as part of a new €30 million scheme sponsored by JP McManus, at an awards ceremony last Saturday in the University Concert Hall. Declan Mills from Castletroy College and Sarah Curtin from Hazelwood College, Dromcollogher, were among the 118 recipients from all over Ireland. The scheme will provide financial assistance to many top performing students who completed their Leaving Certificate in 2008 and students were presented with certificates by the Minister for Education & Science, Batt O’Keeffe

Mr.McManus has contributed €30 million to fund the provision of these scholarships each year and it is estimated that over 1,300 students from the 32 counties will benefit from the scheme over its duration.

Scholarships are awarded to the top performing students in each county who attend any recognised non fee-paying post-primary school and is subject to a means test. A minimum of two scholarships are offered in each county.

Mr McManus said that he “would like to congratulate the 2008 winners for their tremendous hard work and achievement”.

CSPE Trip Report

On Monday the 27th of February last, a C.S.P.E class from Hazelwood College ventured into Limerick City for an educational experience in the Limerick Circuit Court. The class had an early start to reach the court at around 10 o’clock. It was a great experience at the courts for everyone. We were all able to see how the Law works in our country. We were present for two cases and we personally felt sorry for the criminals in these courts as the judge was quite heavy on the sentences. However the Barristers really impressed us with their persuasive skills. We would urge anyone to just drop in and view a court case, although a ring in advance to the reception in the circuit court would be advisable. We really enjoyed our day and we learned so much. We would like to thank the Circuit Court for having us and Mrs Garrihy our class teacher.

Hazelwood “Builds A Bank”

Hazelwood “Builds A Bank”
As a part of our transition year programme, students had the opportunity to get involved in The AIB “Build A Bank” Challenge. Interviews were held last October and out of the people interviewed six were chosen for the different positions in bank including Branch manager and Tellers. As a part of the competition we attended the regional final which was held in the Radisson SAS, Galway last Tuesday the 3rd of March. Competing schools from Galway and Limerick also attended. Unfortunately we did not progress to the National Finals but it was a great day out and a great opportunity to get involved in.
