Hazelwood College Dromcollogher: 3-7
Colaiste Treasa Kanturk: 2-6

This game was highly charged from the beginning with the winners going through to the knock out stages and which left Hazelwood with a mountain to climb at half time-but the Dromcollogher girls don’t mind heights and came through in flying colours at the end of this engrossing contest.
Three minutes into the game Kanturk hit the back of the net and added on three well taken points before the first quarter. Suddenly Hazelwood found themselves six points behind and were struggling to put any score on the board. A great run by the inspirational Maire Flannagan found Emma Browne thirty metres from goal who turned and headed straight to within 10 metres of the goalline before shooting past the hapless Kanturk goalie to register our first score. Emma followed up with a well taken point.
At this point Hazelwood lost captain Ciara Meaney to an ankle injury (but returned again ten minutes into the second half) and they seemed to lose the plot again missing some easy chances but worse still leaving Kanturk in for another goal and two points before the referee blew for half time- a half where Hazelwood operated in first gear.
On the resumption where Aisling O’Brien was now operating at full forward things began to happen for Drom. Aisling laid off a beautiful ball to Vickie Harnett, who popped it over the bar within the first minute. Within five minutes Aisling had the ball in the net and Denise O’Connell slotted over two points from frees without any reply from Kanturk. Ciara came back on at this stage and after some strong running from mid-field got through to score a point. After some great work from Tara Hurley at half back the ball spun across the goal mouth and like a flash Helen Bradley had the ball planted to put Hazelwood ahead for the first time in the match. Kanturk came back scoring a point but two more point from Nicola O’Connell and Helen Bradley clocked the game out leaving the final score 3-7 to 2-6. Best for Hazelwood were M. Flannagan, C. Meaney, H Bradley, T. Hurley, N Kiely, E. Browne and A. O’Brien.
Hazelwood Starting team: A O Brien, S Forde, M Geary, N Greaney, T Hurley, M Flannagan, L Hanley, C. Meany(captain) N. Kiely, D. O’Connell, E Browne, V Harnett, H Bradley, E Noonan. A Moloney.
Subs used: A O’Connor, N. O’Brien, C. O’Leary.

Participants of The Lifesaver Project were also presented with hard-hitting road safety advertisements from around the world, personal accounts from people who have survived serious injury collisions and footage of the families of those who have died.
Emergency personnel also informed participants of their own first hand experiences at the scenes of accidents and also the follow on effects and how it changes people’s lives forever.

Opening Game is a great success for Hazelwood Camogie!

Opening Game is a great success for Hazelwood Camogie!

Hazelwood College : 4-7
St Mary’s, Mallow : 3-2

sencam09
Monday was the opening game our Senior camogie players had versus St Marys Secondary School, Mallow in the Intermediate A Munster League. The teams were very evenly matched throughout the opening ten minutes. St Marys opened the scoring but Hazelwood responded quickly. Katie Dillane scored her first goal of the game net with a shot that left the Mallow keeper with no hope of blocking. Niamh O Brien was superb in defence throughout the entire game but in particular the first half when Hazelwood were struggling. Sarah Moloney did well in goal and there was nothing she could have done to prevent any of the scores gotten by St Marys. Scores were exchanged throughout the game from each side. Hazelwood dominated play in the last five minutes of the half and were unlucky not the score more. Hazelwood trailed by two points facing into the second half.
It was a completely different team that faced into the second half. Within the opening minute Niamh Cagney found the back of the net and was in hard luck to have the goal disallowed for “Square ball”. However this only spurred the team on. The six defensive members of the Hazelwood College team were majestic in the second half and kept St Marys scoreless for the entire 30 minutes. Aideen O Flynn was definitely in “thou shall not score” form chasing and blocking every ball that entered the back lines. Emma Browne played like a true Captain in the second half, leading the team by example, first to every ball and allowing no St Marys player to get any shot in on goal. Joanne Murray was in complete command in the full back position bursting out every opportunity granted to clear her lines. Tara Hurley, one of the hardest working members on the team covered every blade of grass in the field and was unlucky on a number of occasions not the get her name on the score sheet. Our wing forwards were like two thorns in the side of Mallow’s half backs running at the defensive and setting up many attacks. Aisling O Brien hassled the centre back throughout the entire game and did not allow any easy clearance from the Mallow backs. The full forward line of Niamh Cagney, Becky Ryan and Katie Dillane were in super form scoring 4-3 between them. Máiread Geary when moved to the forwards provided 2 points and set up numerous attacks. This was a hard physical game and no score was easily achieved. Hazelwood had a number of wides and were unlucky not to score more. All members of the panel played exceptional Camogie in the second half but the player of the match was without a doubt Katie O Sullivan. Katie played in numerous position throughout the game and showed great vision and determination in each of them.
It was great to get the Camogie 09/10 year off to a winning start! Well done to all involved. Clonakilty are the next opponents we face in the Intermediate A league. The girls face Cashel in the Senior Championship on 4th November. Well done to all involved!

Hazelwood Hurlers Through Munster First Round Safely

Hazelwood Hurlers Through Munster First Round Safely

Hazelwood College 6-14
St. Brogan’s, Bandon 0-9

senhur09

While there was no doubt that Hazelwood College deserved to win this first round game of the Munster “A” Vocational senior championship – the score line certainly flattered the winning team. The game played in Mallow last Wednesday was a hard fought affair but a combination of a high wides total from St. Brogan’s and a mixture of some sharpshooting and luck around the goals helped Hazelwood to ease through the final minutes.
St Brogans opened the scoring in the 2nd minute with a point from play. Jerry Lane responded with a free in the 7th minute. St Brogans scored a point in the 9th minute which was later cancelled out with points from Kevin Noonan in the 11th and 13th minute. Within 60 seconds St Brogans responded with another score on the board, to even the score-board. Jerry Lane popped over another placed ball shortly afterwards. St Brogans slotted over a 65 in the 18th minute to leave the sides 4 a piece in what was turning into a ding-dong battle. Ian Carroll got on the score board with two fine points, running on to lose balls in midfield in the 20th and 21st minute. St Brogans clawed their way back with another pointed free from their number 11. Hazelwood dominated the next 8 minutes with two powerfully taken goals by Keith Lacey and Michael Fitzgibbon. Jerry Lane stepped up to the mark with two pointed frees, one in the 27th minute and the other in the 30th minute. St Brogans scored another point just on the stroke of half time to end the half on a Score line of Hazelwood 2-8, St Brogans 0-6.
The second half started with the referee throwing in the sliothar and St Brogans taking full advantage of it, scoring within seconds. From here Hazelwood dominated with three very well taken goals from Jimmy Kiely, Kevin Noonan and Ian carroll in the next 5 minutes. To finish of this deadly spell Jimmy scored again with a point from play. St Brogans scored again in the 11th minute, trying to decrease the deficit. The on form full forward, Kevin Noonan rattled the net for the second time in the 13th minute. Michael Fitzgibbon and Kevin Noonan both scored a point each in the 18th and 19th minute. St Brogans tried to reduce the score line with another point from play in the 23rd minute. This was to be St Brogans final score for the day. Hazelwood finished the game with a point each for Micheal Brosnan, Keith lacey and Cian Mulcahy. Hazelwood are now through to the quarter-finals. The opposition will be unknown until the back-door games have been played. Next up for the U/18’s, will be Ard Scoil Ris in the limerick schools semi-final.
