Hazelwood College are now through to the semi-final of the Limerick Colleges ‘B’ Senior Hurling Competition after win over Hospital, which was not as easy as the score line suggests in a windy Dromcollogher last Wednesday. Hospital started well by getting the opening two points of the game. Jamie Butler opened Hazelwood’s account in the sixth minute with a fine point, from play, but Hospital struck back a minute later with a fantastic goal and two more points leaving the score 1-4 to 0-2 in favour of Hospital, who did have the advantage of playing with the breeze in the opening half. The scoreboard now read Hospital 1-4 Hazelwood 1-3 with 11 minutes played. The Hospital team was first out of the blocks again in the second half and straight away got a point. Hazelwood, buoyed by their first half fight back, began to exert control with the wind at their backs. They scored 1-3 without reply. The score was now 3-10 to 2-8. Hospital replied with a point but this was cancelled out by a fine long range point from James Regan which was followed soon after by another Shane O’Callaghan goal. Hazelwood at this point were well on top, and with 52 minutes played, James Regan dropped in a high ball in front of the keeper who misjudged it allowed it to bounce into the net. It was now 4-17 to 2-12. Hazelwood crowned the victory off with five more points, two coming from Damien Lacey frees and one each from Eddie Prunty, Sean Fehin and Cillian Fahey. Hazelwood College began their 2012-13 Concern Debates campaign with a victory over Presentation Convent, Listowel. Hazelwood’s team, Julia O’Doherty (Captain), Alannah Matthews, Grace Morey and Lara Grufferty successfully proposed the motion that ‘The world has more to fear from President Romney than from President Obama’.
In a robust and charged debate, Hazelwood and Listowel gave an expert demonstration of debating skills. Throughout the course of the evening, the competition was on a knife edge. Despite the debate being the first in this year’s competition, the standard on both sides was very high, especially in refutation and rebuttal. Hazelwood’s team, all Transition Years, will face St. Mary’s, Charleville in the coming weeks.
