Thanks to TYs Dan OConnell and Kieran O Connor for their report on Fridays hard fought win over Killorglin in U15 Soccer
Hazelwood Collage vs Killorglin Intermediate School
Our U15 boys soccer team from Hazelwood played a thrilling 1st round cup game against Killorglin Intermediate School in Feenagh. Both teams started well and settled quickly. Conor Lynch had a brilliant game, making some great saves and showed great decision making when finding his teammates with his kickouts. Geoffrey Taylor in right back was on fire and kept his opponent very quiet Marko Boyle was equally as good on the left, winning plenty ball and feeding the midfield Darragh Aspinal and Brendan Meahan were like 2 brick walls in the centre of defence. Conor McGarry was very strong on the right-hand side of midfield and linked up well Gary Murphy up front, Who was causing all kinds of hassle for the Killorglin defence. Johnny Power was covering ferocious ground on the left of midfield and getting forward as much as he could. Micheal O Kelly was rock solid as usual in the centre of midfield, very calm on the ball and piking out his passes. Muris McCarthy was on fire putting unbelievable tackles and protecting the ball before releasing to the forwards. Tiernan O Flynn showed great skill on the ball and created plenty chances.
Around 20 minutes into the first half from a Hazelwood corner the ball broke loose and fell kindly into the path of one of the Killorglin players who then played their striker in on goal and the ball ends up in the hazelwood net, 1-0 Killorglin.
The Hazelwood boys went in at half time trailing one goal to nil, down but not out.
The boys came out for the second half fired up and drove at Killorglin. Absolutely nothing got past the Hazelwood boys in the back in the second half. Dylan Boyce came on in midfield and fed plenty ball to the forwards while having chances on goal himself. Mid way through the second half Tiernan carried the ball into Killorglin’s box and was dragged down, the ref didn’t hesitate and pointed straight to the spot. Michael was the man to step up and take the spot kick, he ran up cool and composed and slotted it into the bottom left corner. 1-1. It was end to end all the way to full time. Hazelwood started stronger in extra time but as hard as they tried, they couldn’t find the net in the first half. The second half of extra time was a cagier affair, with the thought of penalties creeping into people’s minds but not Gary Murphys. Darragh from a throw found Tiernan rounded his player but got tackle the loose ball fell to Gary Murphy who slotted home to grant hazelwood the win in extra time
