History students in Hazelwood College recently participated in the Holocaust Education Trust Ireland sponsored Crocus Project. In the course of this project students encouraged by Ms Daly R.E. teacher, with the assistance of Ms Treacy, planted crocus bulbs last autumn as they began to study the Holocaust. Students researched figures involved in the Holocaust, including Fr Maximilian Kolbe who sacrificed himself to save one man to Dr. Aristides De Sousa, who saved thousands of lives. Despite discovering the inhumanity shown to Jews, Poles and others considered by the Nazis to be unworthy of life, the students also discovered the determination of people survive. Uplifting stories included those of the Jews of Denmark, most of who fled to the safetly of Sweden, and the Bielski brothers who fought the Nazis in the forests of Belarus, which inspired the film ‘Defiance’. These second year History students are pictured before their projects researching individuals caught up in the Holocaust and the school memorial to the victims of the Holocaust.
The Hazelwood College Transition Year Build a Bank team who last week won regional final of the prestigious AIB Build a Bank competition. They beat off stiff competition and were awarded first place based on their excellent exhibition, marketing, communication and teamwork skills as well as an impressive business plan. They will now go on the represent the region in the National finals in Dublin in May. Congratulations to all involved. Hazelwood College Transition Year students Aileen Fehin and Triona Dunleavy who were winners of the Graduate.ie quiz. The girls completed the quiz as part of their ECDL course. They have won a prize of a four day trip to Strasbourg including a one day visit to the European Parliament.
Today’s the big day for Mr Grant who has been collecting votes and sponsership all week for the TodayFM Shave or Dye Irish Cancer Society Appeal.
Students and Staff have been all week paying €2 for the opportunity to vote and decide what happens to the left and right sides of Mr Grants hair.
How did the voting go? How will get to shave some or all of Mr Grants hair? How much was raised?

Hazelwood Colleges Engineering teacher Mr Kevin Grant who took part in the Today FM ‘Shave or Dye’ Appeal in aid of the Irish Cancer Society. Kevin is pictured with past pupil and Bellissimo Hairdresser Charles McCarthy. Students and staff voted on whether he shoould save or dye his hair. The fundraising drive was a great success and a total of €1515.00 raised for the worthy cause. Congratulations to all involved.
Concern Debating team of L-R Ciara O’Shea, Loretta Hanly, Marion Brosnan and Michael O’Flynn who beat SMI in the competition while arguing against the motion that “Child Labour is a necessity of life in the developing world”. I hope this letter finds you well. There are two important notices which I must bring to your attention.
• Due to circumstance beyond my control I am forced to close the school on Friday 18th February. Therefore all students will start their midterm break at 3.30PM on Thursday 17th February. Examinations that were scheduled for Friday 18th have been reschedule for Tuesday 8th of February

Imagine building a 1/20th-scale F1 racing car capable of travelling at over 110km/hr – using advanced 3D design software, automated manufacturing technology. It may sound like a new hi-tech company is opening for business, but it is the latest undertaking of a group of students from Hazelwood College in Dromcollogher. Two teams representing the school have recently qualified for the regional finals by submitting their plans for a scale F1 race car. They now have just 3 months to design, test and build their cars before racing against other teams from around the country. With cars travelling at speeds exceeding 110Km/hr the competition is sure to be tight.
F1 in Schools is a unique technology challenge that enables second-level students to get their hands on the latest technology from the worlds of engineering and manufacturing, and with much emphasis in the competition being placed on design, public relations and over-all business plan, the teams need to be expert in many diverse areas. The first area, and probably one of the toughest, is the selling of advertising space on the cars and upcoming websites, so if any companies out there wish to get involved, you can contact the teams through the school, just ask for Thor Racing or the Hazelwood Hellracers
