Family Favourite Wins

Family Favourite Wins

The National Ploughing Championships took place this year from Tuesday 20th to Thursday 22nd of September in Athy Co. Kildare, with 2011 marking its 80th anniversary.

In association with the Farmers Journal newspaper, the public were invited to participate in a recipe competition. The Home Economics department in Hazelwood College encouraged students to submit a family favourite recipe which was quick and easy to prepare as well as using the best of Irish ingredients along with reasons for being a family favourite. A large number of students entered the competition with great eagerness. There was great excitement in the school when news filtered through that Laura Stack a 1st year student had been chosen as one of three lucky winners. Laura’s winning recipe consisted of fish cakes served on a bed of organic salad leaves with a sweet chilli sauce. Laura’s enviable prize consisted of two complimentary entry tickets to the Ploughing Championships and to participate in a cookery demonstration at the Ploughing Championships with celebrity chef Nevin Maguire. Included also in her prize is dinner for two and an overnight stay in the magnificent MacNean Restaurant in Blacklion, Co.Cavan. Nevin was so impressed with Laura’s enthusiasm and skills that he has invited her to his impressive restaurant to gain further culinary experience and benefit from his expert advice.

Laura thoroughly enjoyed this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and not only has been left with fantastic memories but also with the anticipation of another exciting culinary experience with the award winning chef in the near future.
