Junior Certificate Woodwork Projects 2018

Below are the projects submitted by this years woodwork classes for the State Examinations.

Students had to pick one of the following design briefs and submit a project they felt answered the brief.

Coursework 2018 – Design and Realisation

Design Briefs – Ordinary Level

1. Design and make a compact wooden artefact for displaying notes and reminders in the home.
Your artefact should include a facility to hold keys and other small items. It should be elegant in design and hand crafted. The maximum dimension must not exceed 420mm.

2. Design and make a decorative artefact to promote an appreciation of Irish Wildlife.
The artefact should reflect aspects of flora and/or fauna native to your locality. Your design should be enhanced by the use of solid woods. The artefact should be compact and suitable for display in your home.

3. Design and make an attractive educational toy as a gift for a child.
The wooden toy should be designed to help the child recognise shapes and colours and to develop their manipulative skills. The maximum dimension must not exceed 350mm. The applied finish should be non-toxic and safe.

Design Briefs – Higher Level

1. Artefacts that are functionally innovative and of elegant design are admired.
Design and make an attractive wooden container to store baked goods. Your artefact should include an integral and complementary secondary function. Your artefact should be designed for placement on a kitchen worktop or for wall-mounting and be made from appropriately jointed solid wood. The maximum dimension must not exceed 400mm. The applied finish must be food-safe.

2. Wellbeing is important in the life of a young person.
Design and make an elegant artefact to reflect an aspect of wellbeing that is important to you. Your artefact should be enhanced by the use of contrasting solid woods and should showcase a range of handcraft skills and techniques. The artefact should be suitable for display on a mantelpiece or shelf.

3. Streaming and downloading on phones and tablets are popular when accessing online content.
Design and make a compact artefact to support a phone or tablet while viewing content. A facility to adjust the viewing angle should be integral to your design. Your artefact must incorporate storage for headphones and other ancillary items. Your artefact should exhibit skilful handcraft in wood. The size of the artefact must be appropriate to the size of the phone or tablet.

 

Leaving Certificate 2018 Construction Projects

Below are the projects submitted by this years Leaving Certificate class for the State Examinations 2018.

The Leaving Certificate course is broken into three sections with 50% awarded for the terminal exam, 25% for a practical examination and 25% for the projects shown below.

Unlike previous years where students have focused on furniture skills, this years group also looked at other areas of study, including a historical study of Liscarroll Church, and investigation into the design and construction of Mallow Gaa. Also an extensive restoration of a family heirloom, a folding farm chair.

Phase 3 Extension Update #4

As September fast approaches here is a photo montage of the last 3 months on site at the new extension. The interior works in most rooms are approaching completion with only minor tasks left such as connection of light fittings, sockets etc. Furnishing has commenced in other rooms. The heavy construction has moved onto external groundworks and finishes. Currently the building is on track to open on schedule when we return in September.

Coursework 2017 – Design and Realisation

Design Briefs – Ordinary Level
1. Design and make a small side table on which to display a vase or ornament in your home. Your table should be well-proportioned and sturdy. It should be elegant in appearance and should complement the decor in the room. The footprint of the table must not exceed 300mm and the maximum height must not exceed 450mm.
2. Design and make a decorative artefact to celebrate the importance of music in your life. The artefact should reflect a music genre or artist of your choice. Your design should be enhanced by the use of contrasting solid woods. The artefact should be suitable for display on a mantelpiece or shelf.
3. Design and make an attractive artefact to hold and display containers of tea, coffee and sugar on a kitchen worktop. The artefact should be stylish, compact, well made and appropriately finished. It should reflect a theme of your choice.

Design Briefs – Higher Level
1. Fruit is an important part of a healthy and balanced diet. Design and make an artefact to store and display a range of fruit in an appealing manner. A useful and innovative secondary function must be integral to your design. The artefact should be designed for placement on a worktop or for wall-mounting. Your design should incorporate solid wood and have an appropriate applied finish. The maximum dimension must not exceed 400mm.
2. Young people are inspired by scientific discoveries, innovations and advancements and by their contemporary applications. Design and make an elegant artefact reflecting a significant scientific milestone which has had an influential and lasting impact on society. Your design should incorporate native Irish hardwoods and include a range of handcraft skills and techniques. The artefact should be suitable for display on a mantelpiece or shelf.
3. Young people like to have personal items close by while relaxing in their room. Design and make a modern wall-mounted bedside unit which includes an integrated hand crafted lamp. Your design should incorporate a facility to store small personal items in an enclosed manner which avoids clutter. The artefact should be slimline, graceful in form and display hand crafted joints in solid wood. Note: All electrical connections and fittings must comply with current safety standards. The maximum dimension must not exceed 450mm.

Building Works Update

The building of our extension is still progressing well. The new basketball courts are close to completion and the new building remains on schedule to be completed over the summer months.

Building Works Update

Things are progessing well with our new extension. Greatly helped by the good weather for the month of October.

Here are some photographs of the progress. Sub foundations for the new buildings were dug and poured to a depth of 2.4m. On top of these foundations the steel formwork for the main foundation ring were laid. Over the midterm break these upper foundations will be poured and completed

At the second location over 300 truck loads of soil have been removed and the base for the new basketball courts and soccer pitch are being laid.

Traffic Management

The safety of the children is paramount during the construction of our new extension and associated site works.

Only staff cars and buses will be allowed onto the campus from Monday 3rd October. Parents/Guardians should park away from the campus and not block the buses. It was never intended in the original design of the school that parents would drive on the grounds of the school. The intention was parents would let their children out of the car in the drop off zone outside the gates and students would walk on the paths into the school and thus not meet any cars.

As there will be a number of concurrent works taking place on site it is necessary to close the access road to the rear of the school to all traffic. The road space in the teacher car park to the front the of the school is to be reserved exclusively for the school buses and to facilitate the turning of these buses. Parents are no longer permitted to enter the staff car park to collect their students and must remain outside the school gates. Parents may wish to consider other collection points for their children such as ‘the square’ in the village.

We accept these changes will cause inconvenience and possible delay especially in the early days as we all get used to these changes, but remember these changes are designed with the safety of children in mind. Parents entering the school grounds and attempting to turn their cars while students are exiting the building will be an extremely risky activity and is not permitted.
