Hazelwood College Excitement for Science Week 2011!

Hazelwood College Excitement for Science Week 2011!

Science Week Ireland 2011 was celebrated at Hazelwood with the Primary School’s Science Quiz on Thursday night, November 17th. Local primary schools were invited to attend this exciting event to promote Science Week. It was wonderful to welcome all of the primary school pupils, teachers, parents and friends who attended on the night.

Most appreciative thanks must be extended to our generous sponsors, who helped in making this a superb event. Thank you to Clarke’s Books, Munster Business Equipment of Mallow, Moran’s Clothing and Footwear of Charleville and Fitzsimon’s Printers.

During ten rounds of questioning all of the primary pupils thoroughly impressed us with their teamwork and knowledge. Spectacular lucky dip spot prizes and tasty refreshments were very popular among the eager pupils at the half time break. As the end of the quiz came close, excitement was high as the top three placed teams became apparent. Congratulations to Killoughteen National School who were overall winners, with Dromina coming in second place and Gael Scoil O’ Doghair in third place. Thank you and well done to all the teams from Raheenagh, Dromina, Broadford, Feenagh, Tullylease, Ballingarry, Freemount, Killoughteen National Schools and Gaelscoil O Doghair who took part on the night and we look forward to seeing you next year!

Holocaust Memorial

Holocaust Memorial

History students in Hazelwood College recently participated in the Holocaust Education Trust Ireland sponsored Crocus Project. In the course of this project students encouraged by Ms Daly R.E. teacher, with the assistance of Ms Treacy, planted crocus bulbs last autumn as they began to study the Holocaust. Students researched figures involved in the Holocaust, including Fr Maximilian Kolbe who sacrificed himself to save one man to Dr. Aristides De Sousa, who saved thousands of lives. Despite discovering the inhumanity shown to Jews, Poles and others considered by the Nazis to be unworthy of life, the students also discovered the determination of people survive. Uplifting stories included those of the Jews of Denmark, most of who fled to the safetly of Sweden, and the Bielski brothers who fought the Nazis in the forests of Belarus, which inspired the film ‘Defiance’. These second year History students are pictured before their projects researching individuals caught up in the Holocaust and the school memorial to the victims of the Holocaust.
