Hazelwood Heroines Snatch Victory in Local Derby

Recently, Hazelwood College’s Junior Camogie team travelled the short distance to Newcastle West to compete against Scoil Mhuire agus Íde. On a fine day for camogie, the Hazelwood girls came out of the traps all guns blazing with Mary-Kate Fehin (0-2), Íde Cunningham, Shannon Mason and Bríd Flanagan (0-2) all on the scoreboard before SMI registered their first score. Continuous pressure by the Hazelwood girls left the half time score at 1-10 to one point. Despite their lead, the Hazelwood College girls never let up. A great save from Cathy Foley and dogged defending by back Aoife McMahon and Aisling Enright contributed to further scores up the field from Aisling Cunningham and Mary-Kate. Bríd Flanagan bagged two outstanding goals in the last quarter to finish the game as a contest. Well done to all involved!

Top Business Results

Several Hazelwood College students were presented with awards by the Business Studies Teachers Association of Ireland at a BSTAI hosted awards ceremony recently. These students had achieved an A grade in Junior Certificate Business Studies in the 2013 Junior Certificate. Hazelwood Chefs Smell Victory Cooking!

Hazelwood College students Sheila Brown (left) and Cathy Foley (right) competed in the Regional Final of the Apprentice Chef Competition in Institute of Technology, Tralee. Both budding chefs had to use locally sourced ingredients for their dishes. Cathy was chosen to participate in the Apprentice Chef Competition National Final, which will be held on March 28th.

Camán and Run Competition

Hazelwood College students and winners of third place position in the national Camán and Run Competition (from left to right) Bríd Flanagan, Laura Stack, Mary Kate Fehin and Emme O’Callaghan are pictured in the grounds of Croke Park. The competition was staged at half time of the AIB Senior Club all-Ireland, where Milford retained their all-Ireland crown.

Annual Concert and Variety Show

Hazelwood College presents its Annual Variety Show followed by a musical based on excerpts from the successful Movies and Broadway show franchise – Footloose.

The show takes place on Friday 11th and Saturday 12th April. (Sunday 13th – Subject to Demand)

Uncle Ben’s Cookery Competition

Hazelwood College student Mairide Bennis with the students of her first year Home Economic class after being presented with her hamper prize for her success in the Uncle Ben’s Cookery Competition.

O’ Eggciting News for Tara!

Tara Reidy, a first year student in Hazelwood College, was recently announced as one of twenty runner up winners in the O’ Egg Recipe Challenge. This national competition was organised by the Farrelly family, who are Ireland’s leading free range artisan egg producers based in County Cavan. Recipe entries had to incorporate the O’ Egg products of liquid whole eggs or liquid whites, which are available in the chilled fridge cabinets in SuperValu and Centra throughout the country.

This O’ Egg product provides the same flavour and nutritional content of shell eggs while avoiding wastage from cracked eggs in the box, the mess and hassle of picking out egg shells from the bowl. It is time, effort and hassle free for the novice and adventurous cook. This newly launched product is pasteurised thus ensuring a long shelf life of 21 days ( 7 days once opened) and can be frozen successfully.

Tara’ s recipe entry of Chocolate Yogurt Cake was emailed in last December and a lengthy process of adjudication followed with the judges cooking and tasting each recipe entered to ensure that the recipes chosen were successful and as well as meeting the criteria of appearance, flavour and texture.

Tara was amazed and delighted when she received the good news of her winning entry and was thrilled to receive her prize of a signed copy of Rachel Allen’s cookery book.

Silver at Chemistry Olympiad

Michael Wins Silver at Chemistry Olympiad

Recently, Michael Keyes, a 6th year student at Hazelwood College, Dromcollogher competed in the Irish Chemistry Olympiad. This is a chemistry competition where students from Northern Ireland and the Republic are selected to take part. Michael won a silver medal in DCU on Saturday 15th February. This is a phenomenal achievement. Michael will now go forward to compete in a training camp over the Easter holidays where two students will be selected to represent Ireland in the World Chemistry Olympiad in Hanoi in Vietnam in July. We wish Michael all the best and congratulate him on his achievement to date.

Teens get a Taste for Cooking !

Fifth year Home Economics students from Hazelwood College attended a very successful hands on – one day cookery program to help them complete their leaving certificate cookery tasks in Cloughjordan House Cookery School and also visited Cloughjordan Wood-Fired Bakery in Tipperary recently.
